The paper treats about ethno botany of betel chewing as one of the most ancient multifunctional traditions of the South of Asia and the Pacific. Symbolic ties of the betel chew, as well as of its main plant and mineral components are defined on the basis of Northern Philippine highland cultures. In epics and mythology betel chewing results in miraculous conception and birth of a hero. Communicative, etiquette and ritual functions of betel chew components are based on mythological characteristics ascribed to them, derived from their pharmacologic properties as well as from the place that these plants occupy in traditional folk taxonomies. Symbolic connection unites areca nuts with semen, blood and saliva; with gold and precious stones, that is, with material objects characterized with high semiotic status. Despite the general tendency of being wiped out under the pressure of modern Western-oriented standards of culture, betel chewing is still alive, achieving new forms and functions and even demonstrating minor geographic expansion. The paper is based on language, folklore and ethnographic materials primarily of the Ifugaos and the neighbouring highland ethnolinguistic groups of Northern Luzon Kalingga, Bontok, Tingguian and other peoples of the Philippines Tagalog, Visaya, Maranaw etc. The paper treats about alcohol production and consumption in traditional and modern cultures of Southeast Asia, with a focus on the Philippines and Cambodia, where the author conducts long-term fieldwork. Types of alcoholic drinks are classified by material rice, palm- and sugarcane sap, honey , way of production fermentation or distillation , level of survival, ritual importance and liability for the present-day life. Following generally similar patterns, the ways of alcohol production and consumption show astounding variability. Although being spread wider in the past, e. The material culture of alcohol, as depicted in the objects collected since the end of the 19th c. The paper is richly illustrated with field photographs taken by the author. Those include field diaries, audio and videorecordings of the performance and of interviews, photographs and drawings by cultural practitioners, as well as objects relevant to the chant, collected for the Kunstkamera Museum. Textualizing epics, esp. Apart from the materials collected during the 3-month field trip to the Philippines when the chant was performed, field materials relevant to the topic comprise the data on a journey towards the mythological Kitumman — the confluence of rivers where the soul of the dead parts with the living, as well as later interviews and performances collected in — Indonesians and their neighbors. Festschrift for Elena V. Revunenkova and Alexander K. Stanyukovich, editor and compiler. Maclay Publications, Issue 1, The book is dedicated to Elena V. Ogloblin, University year-mates and life-time friends. Since their graduation in from the Indonesian philology department, Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg State University, these two powerful characters have dominated St. Petrsburg Indonesian studies. They have shared with their numerous followers and colleagues their brilliant knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia, deep understanding of traditional and modern life of Nusantara and in the best traditions of hereditary St. Petersburg intelligencia. The present collection of papers resulted from a conference in honor of these, our teachers, mounted by their ex-students and colleagues in We caught our teachers at surprise, knowing their modest ways and opposition to any kind of celebrations in their honor. This is the reason why there are papers by jubilars in this volume. After a long preparation period this collection of papers finally appears just before the year birth anniversaries of Elena V. The present book starts the new series of publications named «Maclayevsky Sbornik» for papers and monographs on Insular Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific. The book will be of interest for anthropologists, philologists, linguists, historians and the general reader, interested in traditional and modern culture and languages of Southeast Asia and beyond. Stanyukovich , Rodion Fedorov. We present an overview of the fieldwork in Cambodia and the Philippines in —, mainly focused on the endangered indigenous cultures. The research concentrated on oral literature, ethnobotany of betel and traditional wine making, shamanism, sorcery and healing. Different backgrounds of the two authors added to the understanding of differences and to defining similarities of the insular and mainland cultures. In Cambodia, we were a part of an expedition organized by linguists, who concentrated on the survey of Bakhnaric languages of Ratanakiri province, initiated in Stanyukovich resumed the ethnographic survey of the area, started three years ago, working with the Tampuan, Kroeng, Katyok, and getting collateral materials in the adjacent Kmer and Lao villages. Fedorov participated in both surveys. We managed to record the performance of the Tudbulul epic in Tasiman, Lake Sebu, and a number of kata-kata songs of the Sama of Khana-an, Matina Aplaya. We found interesting parallels between the practices of the ananambal, Catholic sorcerers and the healers of Cebu and Siquijor, and those of the kru — shamans and medicine men of the Tampuan and the Kroeng of Cambodia. Сборник МАЭ, т. Contents of old Philippine collections, including the need for their attributions, influenced the criteria used by the author to collect new museum items in and in Sbornik MAE vol. The importance of combining the studies on old collections with fieldwork and formation of new collections is emphasized. Log in with Facebook Log in with Google. Remember me on this computer.
