Romania has 319 cities and towns: one city with over 1 million inhabitants, 17 other cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, 153 cities with a population between 10,000 and 100,000 inhabitants, 110 towns between 5,000 and 10,000 inhabitants, and 38 towns with less than 5,000 inhabitants.

List of heads of government of RomaniaThis is a list consisting of all the heads of government of modern and contemporary Romania (i.e. prime ministers, both in full constitutional powers and acting or ad interim), since the establishment of the United Principalities in 1859 to the present day. The incumbent acting prime minister of Romania, as of 8 June 2025, is Cătălin Predoiu, the current leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL), who has been serving since 6 May 2025 onwards, after the resignation of Marcel Ciolacu. Previously Ciolacu has been leading a PSD-PNL grand coalition government, as part of and representing the ruling National Coalition for Romania (CNR), since mid June 2023 to the present day. The Ciolacu Cabinet is the second CNR government to date and the only one to be composed of only two major political parties, after the UDMR/RMDSZ was eliminated from the coalition and, consequently, entered in opposition. In addition, the share of governmental power between the two major political parties which constitute this CNR cabinet is equal (i.e. 11 ministries per each constituent political party). For some time however, the stability and cohesion of the incumbent cabinet are both quite debatable.

Prime Minister of RomaniaThe prime minister of Romania (Romanian: Prim-ministrul României), officially the prime minister of the Government of Romania (Romanian: Prim-ministrul Guvernului României), is the head of the Government of Romania. Initially, the office was styled President of the Council of Ministers (Romanian: Președintele Consiliului de Miniștri), when the term "Government" included more than the Cabinet, and the Cabinet was called the Council of Ministers (Romanian: Consiliul de Miniștri). The title was officially changed to Prime Minister by the 1965 Constitution of Romania during the communist regime.

President of RomaniaThe president of Romania (Romanian: Președintele României) is the head of state of Romania. The president is directly elected by a two-round system, and, following a modification to the Romanian Constitution in 2003, serves for five years. An individual may serve two terms that may be consecutive. During their term in office, the president may not be a formal member of a political party. The president of Romania is the supreme commander of the Romanian Armed Forces. The office of president was created in 1974 when communist leader Nicolae Ceaușescu elevated the presidency of the State Council to a fully fledged executive presidency. It took its current form in stages after the Romanian Revolution, culminating in adopting Romania's current constitution in 1991. Nicușor Dan is the 6th and current president since 26 May 2025.

List of presidents of Romania by time in office thumbnail

List of presidents of Romania by time in officeThis is a list of presidents of Romania by time in office. This is based on the difference between dates; if counted by number of calendar days all the time periods would be one day greater. The political party column in the table below denotes the political party or political alliance that sustained/supported their candidacy, as the president is legally forbidden by the Romanian constitution to be a member of any party while still in office. The first exception was Nicolae Ceaușescu, who was president under a different constitution, and who consequently was both a member of the PCR and president of Romania at the same time. The second exception is Nicușor Dan, who was the only president who did not officially belong to any political party at the time of his inauguration. Traian Băsescu was the only president suspended/impeached twice to date (once in each of his two mandates, more specifically in 2007 and 2012). Also, Klaus Iohannis was the only president who resigned from his post, in 2025. Notes: 1 Suspended/impeached from office for 33 days in 2007, then for a second time in 2012 for 48 days.
