Twenty law schools offer common law schooling, whereas seven schools offer schooling in the civil law system. Although the judicial system in most Canadian provinces operate under a common law system, the province of Quebec uses the civil law system for private law matters. As a result, most Canadian law schools that offer schooling in civil law are based in Quebec.
Lincoln AlexanderLincoln MacCauley Alexander (January 21, 1922 – October 19, 2012) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who became the first Black Canadian to be a member of Parliament in the House of Commons, a federal Cabinet Minister (as federal Minister of Labour), a Chair of the Worker's Compensation Board of Ontario, and the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1985 to 1991. Alexander was also a governor of the Canadian Unity Council. Alexander was born in Toronto to Caribbean immigrant parents. After service during World War II, he received a Bachelor of Arts from McMaster University in 1949 before earning his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1953. A member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, he became the first black Member of Parliament in Canadian history after being elected to the House of Commons in the 1968 Canadian federal election. He was named Minister of Labour in 1979 under prime minister Joe Clark, holding the position until the PC party's defeat in the 1980 election. He resigned from the House of Commons later that year and became Chair of the Worker's Compensation Board of Ontario. In 1985, he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, holding the position until 1991. From 1991 to 2007, he became Chancellor of the University of Guelph, becoming the first person to serve five terms in that capacity. He died in 2012 and was accorded a state funeral. Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University)'s faculty of law was renamed in his honour in 2021.
Ontario Universities' Application CentreThe Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) (French: Centre de demande d’admission aux universités de l’Ontario) is a non-profit organization based in Guelph that processes online applications for admission to universities in Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1971 by the Council of Ontario Universities and the Ontario Universities' Council on Admissions, to reduce the duplication and costs involved in processing applications. The OUAC processes applications to undergraduate programs, medical school, law school, teacher education, and rehabilitation sciences programs at nearly all of Ontario's universities - only the RMC does not process applications through the OUAC.
Toronto Metropolitan UniversityToronto Metropolitan University (TMU, or Toronto Met), formerly Ryerson University, is a public research university located in Toronto, Canada. The university's core campus is situated within the Garden District, although it also operates facilities elsewhere in Toronto. The university includes seven academic divisions/faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Community Services, the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, the Faculty of Science, the Creative School, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, and the Ted Rogers School of Management. Many of these are further organized into smaller departments and schools. The university also provides continuing education services through the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education. The institution was established in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology, named after Egerton Ryerson, a prominent contributor to the design of the public school system and teachers' college in Canada West. In 1964, the institution was reorganized under provincial legislation and renamed Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. Under that name, it was granted limited degree-granting powers during the 1970s. The institution was reorganized into a full-fledged university in 1993 and renamed Ryerson Polytechnic University. In 2002, several years after the university's school of graduate studies was established, the university adopted the name Ryerson University. In 2022, it was renamed Toronto Metropolitan University, in response to concerns about Egerton Ryerson's influence on the Canadian Indian residential school system. The university is a co-educational institution, with approximately 44,400 undergraduates and 2,950 graduate students enrolled there during the 2019–20 academic year. As of 2024, TMU has over 240,000 alumni. The university's athletics department operates several varsity teams that play as TMU Bold, competing in the Ontario University Athletics conference of U Sports.
Chile Eboe-OsujiChile Eboe-Osuji (born 2 September 1962) is a Nigerian jurist. He is an incoming Judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice, an International Jurist at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, a Special Advisor to the President's Office at Toronto Metropolitan University, and a Member of the Media Freedom Coalition's High Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom. Eboe-Osuji served as the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), The Hague from March 2018 to March 2021. The Nigerian-born Eboe-Osuji was also concurrently serving as a senior judge in the Appeals Division of the ICC during this time. In his role at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, Eboe-Osuji leads discussions on the international human rights regime, the international humanitarian law regime, the role of international courts and tribunals, and the rule of law. Prior to his work with the International Criminal Court, he was the Legal Advisor to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. He also served at various times as a senior prosecutor at both the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the Special Court for Sierra Leone.

Lincoln Alexander School of LawThe Lincoln Alexander School of Law is the law school of Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. As of 2025, it is the newest law school in Canada, with its first cohort of students matriculated in 2020 and graduating in 2023. The school is named after Lincoln Alexander, the first Black Canadian to become a Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister in the House of Commons of Canada. Alongside Lakehead University's Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, it is one of two universities in Ontario offering an Integrated Practice Cirriculum (IPC). The IPC integrates articling into the three year Juris Doctor program, thus allowing students to write the bar exam directly after graduation.
