LESSON IDEA 💡 Managing the F2F classroom integrating technology and group work
BEFORE F2F THE LESSON
Step 1 Choose a dialogue to practice from the textbook.
Sample dialogue
Daniel: Hi, Eka. I'm in the bus terminal. Where’s Simon? What’s he like?
Eka: He's tall. He's got fair hair.
Daniel: Let me see. There are many tall people with fair hair. Is he wearing jeans?
Eka: No, he's wearing a school uniform, black trousers, and a blue shirt with long sleeves.
Daniel: Is he wearing a black hat?
Eka: Yes! And he's carrying a green backpack.
Daniel: There he is. Simon!
Step 2 Provide an activity to be done BEFORE the F2F lesson (flipping the classroom approach)
Note: The teacher may distribute activities 1 and 2 according to students’ strengths or allow students to choose activity 1 or 2.
Sample activity 1 Real Simon avatar
1 a.Read Simon’s description in the dialogue above and create an avatar for Simon.
Use: Bitmoji
Other options
- Students draw and paint the character, and then take a photo of the drawing to create a digital image.
- Students may use a photo from the photo gallery in their cellphones, and turn it into an art photo using an app like Prisma
- Students may take a photo and edit it using Prisma or another photo editor.
- No connectivity in the classroom option: students draw the avatar and all drawings are displayed on the classroom walls.
1b. Share the avatar in Telegram/Google Classroom/bring the paper avatar to class.
Sample activity 2 (more challenging) New Simon avatar
a. Read the dialogue above and change Simon's description (two physical characteristics and clothes).
b. Create an avatar for the 'new Simon'. Use: https://www.bitmoji.com/ . Students may use the other options above in (Other options) to create the avatar.
c.Share the avatar in Telegram/Google classroom/classroom/bring the paper avatar to class.
THE F2F LESSON
Step 3
a. Put into groups of four/six.
b. ⏰ Set a time limit for arranging the seats and have two devices per group and Google Classroom/Telegram group ready and open. A whiteboard/laptop and beam may be used to show the gallery of different avatars shared in telegram/Google Classroom if cellphones are not allowed. In case of using paper drawings, the teacher will ask two members of each group to display all paper avatars on the classroom walls or on the floor.
c. 🗣 🗣 Members of each group show their individual avatars, and choose the avatar they will describe (‘real’ or ‘new’). If laptop and beam is used, each group selects a ‘real’ and ‘new’ avatars and describes one. One student per group/teacher takes a photo/of each group’s selected avatars. If the paper avatars are used, a member of each group stands up and takes two paper avatars (‘real’ and ‘new’)
d. Students practice the dialogue describing their selected avatar and have the ‘real’ and ‘new’ images ready.
e. 🗣 Each group reads the dialogue aloud and show/share in Telegram/on whiteboard/put up tow paper drawings two Simons: a 'real' and the 'new'
f. After listening the class should match the dialogue to the correct avatar.
g. The first group to choose the right avatar wins a ⭐️
Suggestions with other topics and language objectives
Other topics
For other topics like parts of the house, places in town, the same steps of the step 2 above may be followed:
For example: Places in town
For the before the lesson task, the teacher asks students to take photos of places in town during the week. Then, students edit the photos, for example, adding text to the photo/adding stickers with a message/fx effects . Then, share their photos in Telegram/Google classroom for later description, matching as done in the activity step 2 above.
Other language objectives
If the textbook text is practicing other language objectives like comparison, obligation, possession, etc the same steps 2 and 3 above may be used, but students may change the verbs, the modals to create a new dialogue.
If the teacher wants to focus on other things like pronunciation, students may check pronunciation before the lesson.
Then, record the dialogue and share it.
A recording app which is fun and students may enjoy is Auto rap Smule that turns the recording into a rap. Raps can be shared in Telegram and sing in the classroom.
Adding variety is important to keep students' motivation.
Good luck!
