LEARN HOW TO BECOME A CYBER SECURITY SPECIALIST
Who would not want to learn to become a cybersecurity specialist? At this point in history, it's hard to imagine a cool job. Are there other white-collar industries where front-line workers are virtually fighting hardened criminals or foreign governments? Cybersecurity is at the forefront of the national conversation and there is definitely an amazing need for more experts in the field. Interested?
Again, because of the relative lack of information security professionals in the field, it's actually a little easier to get a foot in the door than you might think. A degree will give you a head start, as well as a certification known as CISSP (more on this later), but a surprising number of people are learning on the job. Even if you've studied with another industry, it's never too late to learn how to become a cybersecurity specialist. Here is what you will need.
Do you need a specialized degree to learn how to become a cybersecurity specialist?
Information security is a relatively new career. Most of the people we see as veterans on the ground do not have a specialized cybersecurity degree - because when they started, the colleges did not even have majors in that area. Today, of course, there are many college courses specializing in information security. If you have a degree in computer science, it should not be difficult to get a job right out of college, but a degree is not alpha or omega.
Basically, if you can program, if you understand the systems administration, or if you are a certified network engineer, then you can enter the ground floor of the information security. These certifications are not hard to find. Business schools and night schools offer TCP certification for networking, as well as certifications such as the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSA).
For programming, we can follow the same route, but good coders are in great demand. A number of coding bootcamps have emerged that teach students the fundamentals of programming languages in a short period of time. There are even some specialized academies in the cybersecurity code that claim to have a high degree of graduation.
What about CISSP certification?
The CISSP is just one of many certifications that confirm that the holder is an expert in the field of information security. Although obtaining this certification is important if you want to unlock senior roles in the field, this is not a prerequisite. In fact, candidates need five years of experience in the field before obtaining a CISSP - and obtaining a college degree in cybersecurity does not give up one year of this requirement.
In short, cybersecurity is a discipline that always values work experience in relation to education and presents multiple opportunities for candidates of any age or skill to step into a relatively short gap in the industry.
