INTRODUCTION OF LE TRUC

Le Truc is a very old game that dates back to the 1400’s. Originating in Spain, the game was originally played with a Spanish suited deck. This deck uses coins, cups, swords, and batons. Although traditionalists might argue that the game should be played with a Spanish deck, it can be played and enjoyed with a French suited deck just fine.

In this two player trick taking game, players will bluff their way through hands in an attempt to raise the possible score. Each hand consists of three tricks, and the player that takes two tricks earns the points.

THE CARDS & THE DEAL

From a 52 card deck, remove all of the cards that are ranked 2 – 6. The remaining cards rank as follows: (low) 9,10,J,Q,K,A,8,7 (high).

Dealer shuffles and doles out 3 cards to each player one card at a time. The rest of the cards are set aside. One redeal per round is allowed only if both players agree. If both agree, the hands are discarded, and the dealer doles out three more cards.

Deal alternates each round. 룰렛

THE PLAY

THE FIRST TRICK

The trick begins with the non-dealer. They play one card from their hand. The opposite player follows with any card from their hand. They do not have to follow suit. The highest card played takes the trick. Whoever takes the trick leads the next one.

If both cards are the same rank, neither player wins the trick. This is called a spoiled trick. The player who led the spoiled trick leads the next one.

Play continues with each player trying to capture two tricks.

RAISING THE SCORE

Before a player plays a card to the trick, they may raise the point value of the round. This is done by asking, “2 more?”.  If the request is accepted by the opposite player, the total points possible for the round raises from 1 to 2. If the opposite player rejects the request, the round ends immediately. The player who made the requests scores points equal to the value of the round prior to the request.

More than one request can be made in a hand, raising the point value of the round from 2 to 6, then 8, and so on. In fact, a raise can happen twice in one trick if the trick-leader requests, and the follower also requests prior to playing their card.

A player may also declare “My remainder.” The opponent can either reject the request which ends the round with the declarer winning the game, or they may also declare “My remainder.” In that case, the player who wins the round also wins the game.

A player is allowed to fold at any time during the round whether or not a request was made.

SCORING

The player who takes 2 tricks, or the player who takes the first trick in the event that each player only captures one, earns points for the round. The player earns whatever the round was raised to. If neither player raised the point value, the round is worth 1 point.

If the first two tricks are spoiled, the winner of the third trick earns points for the round.

If all three tricks were spoiled, neither player earns points.

If a player folds during the round, the opposite player earns the points.

WINNING

The first player to earn 12 points or more wins the game.
