The Galaxy opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when star forward Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández capitalized on a defensive error, slotting home a clinical finish. However, Austin FC responded just before halftime as Sebastián Driussi curled in a stunning free-kick to level the score.

The second half saw both teams ramp up the intensity. LA regained the lead in the 58th minute when Riqui Puig unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box, leaving Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver with no chance.
