Контрольная работа 9 класс к УМК В.П. Кузовлева «English—9»
Task 1. Listen to the tape about Jane's hobby and answer if these statements are true or false.
Books have always been very important. People need books for studying and they read them for pleasure too. However, that's true that people of my age read books less than our parents and grandparents did. I think it's because the world has changed — we get information from different sources, not only from books like in our grandparents' times.
Now we have TV, radio and the Internet where we can almost certainly find any information in seconds. Another reason for reading less is the lack of free time. Our life is very busy and it's not easy to find a couple of hours for reading a book.
However, in spite of the lack of time I can't do without reading and that's why I use my electronic book a lot. I often read on buses, trains or when I have to wait for someone or something. I think that an electronic book is much more convenient than a traditional paper book. An e-book is a small device but it contains lots of texts. It's easy to use because it opens at the exact place I stopped reading it last time. I've got dozens of traditional books in my e-book.
Most of my books are science fiction because that is my favourite genre. I also like historical novels and I enjoy reading science articles which I download from the Internet. I don't really think that people will ever stop reading but books may change a lot and probably very soon traditional paper books will be only in museums.

1. The information about different sources of information.
2. The information about the electronic books.
3. The information Jane's favorite author.
4. The information about Jane's favorite genre of literature..
Task 3 .Read the text and decide if the statements given below are true/false or not stated.
People can't imagine our life without books. They play a very important part in our life.
Books are our friends. People meet them when we are very small and can't read, but we remember our mother read them for us. We learn very much from books.
Books educate people in different spheres of life. They develop our imagination, make us think and analyse. They help to form our character and the world outlook. Books help us in self-education and in deciding problems of life. They make our life more interesting.
People read both for knowledge and for pleasure. Different people read different books. They help us with our lessons and work. We read serious books which help us understand the life, give us answers to questions which worry us, they make us think.
Many people enjoy so-called "easy reading"- detectives, amusing, humorous stories, fantastic. But so many people, so many tastes.
1) People read books both for knowledge and for pleasure.
2) Many people don't like «easy reading».
3) Many people like to read detective stories.
4) Books help people in self education and in deciding problems of their life.
5) Nowadays people don't like to go to library.
6) The electronic books are popular among young people now.
Task 4. Match three texts with the appropriate titles. One of the titles is extra.
A. The story about the adventures of little Alice became popular all over the world. “Alice in Wonderland” is primarily a children’s story, but adults have enjoyed the novel for over a century together with children.
Many elements of “Alice” were not completely new. Talking animals, for instance, or the story idea in which a child or children are carried away from reality into a fantasy world. However, it was Carroll who established a new motif that would be used again and again in children’s literature: Peter Pan, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Narnia books, and the Harry Potter books. That is the possibility for the main characters to travel back and forth between the real world and wonderland.
B. Mark Twain wrote “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” in 1884. Since then, the book has been published in at least sixty languages, and some people say it is the best book ever created by an American writer. American students have “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” on their school reading list and parents, teachers and literary experts still debate the problems touched in the book.
The writer’s real name was Samuel Clemens. Samuel was born in 1835. He grew up in the state of Missouri on the Mississippi River. After his father died, young Samuel went to work as an assistant to a publisher. Ten years later, he became a pilot on a steamboat that sailed on the Mississippi. He heard the riverboat workers call out the words “mark twain!” That was a measure for the depth of water. Later he used this word combination as a pen-name.
C. First introduced in 1927, The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories are a series of books about the adventures of brothers Frank and Joe Hardy. They are teenage detectives who solve one mystery after another. The Hardy Boys were so popular among young boys that in the 1930s a similar series was created for girls featuring a sixteen-year-old detective named Nancy Drew. The cover of each volume of The Hardy Boys states that the authorof the series is Frank Dixon. The Nancy Drew Mystery Stories for girls are supposedly written by Carol Keen. Over the years, though, many fans of both series have been surprised to find out that Frank Dixon and Carol Keen were only pen names. Nobody knew who was hiding behind those names or who actually wrote The Hardy Boys and The Nancy Drew Stories.
