Gardening, househelp and playing with kids on an island in Saare, Estonia

Kuressaare buying weed

New Zealand. Min stay requested: at least a week. What's this? We have a family farm in Estonia on an island called Saaremaa. It's a busy household with lots of going on all the time. We grow a little bit of everything, mostly beef and dairy cattle, poultry and vegetables. We also have some fruit trees and berry bushes, sheep, a goat, a dog and cats. Our family is trying to be as self-sufficient as we can, so we preserve food for the winter and also forage berries, mushrooms, herbs. Farm is located 4 km from the sea and 8 km from the nearest town Kuressaare. We have travelled around a fair bit ourselves and Mare has also volunteered in organic farms in Australia, so we have many stories to share. You can learn about many aspects of farming, like animal husbandry and growing vegetables. Also Estonian traditional cooking, preserving food for winter, herbal medicines. We would also love to learn your language. This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here. In autumn we need help with garden work mostly harvesting vegetables , cooking, cleaning, doing dishes, playing with kids they love art and sports , picking eggs, etc. Work depends a lot of the time of the year. Spring to autumn there is more work in the garden and fields digging, planting, seeding, weeding, picking berries etc. Winter time mostly in the chicken shed feeding, picking and packing eggs. If you have some skills like building it would be really handy but if not you're still welcome. This host offers a language exchange This host has indicated that they are interested in sharing their own language or learning a new language. You can contact them directly for more information. You will have your own room in the workers apartment, which is located at our dairy farm. There is a shower and a kitchen. Kitchen is freshly renovated. You can have your breakfast and dinner there we provide the food of mostly what we grow in the farm , lunch is in the family house which is located 1 km from the apartment. The farm is located 8 km from Kuressaare and 4 km from the sea. So on your time off you can always go there. There are buses a few times a day. We go to town sometimes by car and can drop you off and pick you up. Town has many historical buildings like 14th century castle that has a museum inside. Summer is a busy time in our farm but we always try to find some time to relax ourselves. We like going to the beach with our dog often. Smoking is okay outdoors. Mixed diet. Vegetarians welcome. We might be able to host you if you have some allergies or intolerances. We have wifi connection at the apartment. Smoking is allowed outdoors. My little girls almost 5 and almost 2 yrs old loved spending time with her. Tereza was very creative with them drawing and playing outside. She was a big help doing the dishes and helping me with cleaning etc. Left by Workawayer Tereza for host. I really enjoyed the time with Mare and her family, specially the little girls. It was still quite cold, so I spent a lot of time inside helping with the dishes, cleaning windows etc. But I could also enjoy a lot of time outside babysitting little Birgit and Joanna, feeding lambs or picking brunches. During my days off I was doing small trips, … read more buses don't go very often there, but they are free and always on time. I was also walking to the town and back, if the bus wasn't convenient. Accommodation was exactly like I expected on farm. There were cows and gees, which were quite noisy, even at night, but I got used to them. I had my own room with very comfortable bed, and shared bathroom and kitchen. You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership. This was my first workaway experience and I had a really nice 2 weeks stay at Mare's family farm. The family is lovely, and although not all of them speaks english, I've always felt comfortable and accepted in the house. Most of the work consisted of picking berries they make tasty juices and cakes with them! I was living above the cow house and sharing common spaces with other farm workers. They lended me a bike so I was able to explore a bit more around the island bus connections are quite limited. If you want a peaceful experience while being involved in farm life, this is a good place. Left by host for Workawayer Marius. Marius is a friendly and helpful young man. He helped us with numerous tasks including mowing the lawn, doing the dishes, rock picking etc. We had interesting conversations. I hope you're having fun in Belgium. Take care! View all 16 feedbacks. Left by Workawayer Violeta for host. Mare was really nice, and her family animals included are lovely. We didn't stay more than one night there because the accomodation didn't have the basic we needed. But we talked about that and she was very comprehensive, so I appreciate that a lot. Thank you! Left by host for Workawayer Louise. Louise was a big help in our house. She helped with babysitting, feeding the lambs, picking eggs, doing dishes and cleaning the kitchen, some renovation like putting up wallpaper etc. She is fun, enthusiatic and easy to get along with. Coop is a really friendly and cool guy. It was lots of fun having him around. He always had interesting stories to share and we shared quite a few laughs. He was great with my daughter Joanna. Coop did a great job helping us with many things including wood chopping and stacking, spreading manure around fruit trees and berry bushes, emptying the … read more greenhouse and so on. He is a hard worker, fast learner and has a positive attitude so I'd recommend anyone to host him. I wish I'd had more time to show you around the island. I hope you're having fun in Latvia! Left by Workawayer Emanuele for host. Mare is a really good woman with two lovely little daughters. I spent there about ten days, my experience was ok and work was very easy and never strong: we worked in his garden from monday to friday from 8. If you have to stay there I think that about ten days are sufficient to have a good experience, not more 'cause it's a place enough isolated and there are not many buses, but you can organize yourself with a bike or with hitch-hiking people are very kind! The last recommendation is to rent a car: the rent is very cheep and in this way you can visit Saarema's island just in one day! Kuressaaree's city is wonderful too and it's far just 8 kilometers from the farm, so don't miss it! Left by host for Workawayer Emanuele. Emanuele is a friendly and helpful guy. He helped us with berry picking, making tomato juice and cleaning beans. He also cooked a delicious Italian dinner. He is an interesting guy with lots of stories to share. Thank you and all the best! Left by Workawayer Marisa for host. I felt very comfortable being with Mare and her family! It was my first experience as a workawayer, and I couldn't be happier! Mare and her family are very kind, making sure I was comfortable and had enough food all the time. We shared lunches and Mare was always willing to chat with me about a lot of different topics. They have also Brianna, the … read more dog, and a lot of cats to pet : I stayed around 10 days, but I would have gladly stayed longer! I worked about 5 hours per day, and my tasks consisted of, for example, picking tomatoes, potato harvest, washing dishes and general cleaning of the house and a little gardening. The place to stay is a small house 10 minutes from Mare's house, which I shared with the milking lady, and another farm worker. Although the place was a bit dirty upon arrival, Mare and her mother provided me with everything I needed to clean it. And of course there is everything that I needed for cooking. Also, I had a bike available to go to the Kuresaare center. From there, you can take a bus to explore the island a bit. I definitely recommend Mare and her family to have a workawayer experience. Thank you for everything! Left by host for Workawayer Marisa. I was really happy to have Marisa around. She is really helpful and friendly. A really great person. I really appreciate all the help cleaning, doing dishes, potato harvest and so on. My daughters also liked her a lot. Thank you so much for your help, wish you could've stayed longer :D I wish you the best in Spain! Left by Workawayer Martinagaudino for host. I spent two weeks and a half last August with this lovely family. Mare is a nice host and an interesting person with many stories to share. As stated here, in summertime the family needs help in the garden, so I mostly picked berries but also tomatoes once and peeled beans sometimes. However, I wish I'd been able to do it more, but that wasn't possible due to a few reasons, and here I'm sorry to also have to point out a few description inaccuracies: Vaivere the village in which the farm is located is 8 km far from Kuressaare and there are only very few buses every day and the last one on the way back is at PM; there is a bicycle I could ride, but only one, therefore I had to take shifts with the other workawayer; I'm not sure the family members go downtown quite often, so I was only able to get a ride to Kuressaare when off work twice, when Mare took the workawayers out for lunch and when she gave me a ride to the bus station when I was leaving. However, I always try to find the pros in whatever happens, so I can say that otherwise I couldn't have the chance to meet a bunch of other nice Saaremaa people while hitchhiking, which went quite well. I wish I could also spend some more time with Mare and the rest of the family, because we actually managed to have dinner together only three times, but I understand that she is busier now that she has two children of whose one is only a baby and that summer is the busiest period on the farm for the other family members. I still enjoyed that little amount of time together, learning many things about Estonia and having fun with the adorable Johanna! I deeply appreciate their interest for the workawayers culture, wherever they come from, so they asked me many questions about my country and let me and the other workawayer cook for them. Lucky to find such great people on this journey! Thank you for your hospitality! Mark and Anna are a really lovely young couple. They are interesting people and helped us a lot during their short visit. I am sorry about the experience with the accommodation. For future reference to any interested volunteers we have a possibility to stay in a campervan now, which is really cozy and smoke free. We only stayed two nights and one working day instead of 3 weeks Monday evening - Wednesday morning. Mare and her family are very very kind people, we talked mostly with Mare, who has lots of stories about her travels, which are useful and also amusing to hear. The work even if we only worked one day in the garden was reasonable and … read more pleasant. We ate by them or got things to cook our own in the workers place. The reason why we left earlier was unfortunately the accomodation itself, and this was our personal decision, and Mare was understanding about it. Thank you. We anyways are happy to get to know Mare and wish them all the best! Left by host for Workawayer Justine. Justine was excellent with my daughter. Justine is a very nice young woman and we had many interesting conversations. All the best in your forthcoming projects. Left by Workawayer Justine for host. I stayed for one week at the farm. During winter there is not so much to do, but Mare was king enough to have me into her farm. I mainly played with Joanna, did the dishes and cleaned the kitchen. I was sleeping at the cow house which is 10 minutes away walking. Because of the language it was a bit hard to communicate with the workers, but we … read more managed some sort of dialect between Finnish and English :. Left by host for Workawayer Sarah. Sarah was really helpful with chores around the house and in the garden and taking care of our little girl Joanna. She is a very active young woman with a positive outlook on life. Sarah was fun to have around and Joanna loved spending time with her. Thank you and good luck with everything in Berlin! Left by Workawayer Sarah for host. I spent 2 weeks during octobre at Mare's and really enjoyed that time. The family is really sweet once Anne found out I love seabuckthorn-juice, she prepared some nearly everyday and the work was easy to do, as it was rather cold and rainy, it was mostly helping in the house, but also some work in the garden, when it didn't rain picking apples, … read more cutting dead flowers. However, one should know that most attractions are closed in winter and there are only a few buses so it takes patience and planning to go around the island by bus. Hitch-hiking is a good alternative though and in summer time there is a lot more going on. In spite of the cold, I really enjoyed my time on the farm. Left by host for Workawayer Anete. Anete is a friendly and curious girl. She was a great help in our farm with numerous tasks. As I love animals very much was very happy to be around them and cuddle. Well spent vacation! Left by Workawayer Constanze for host. Dear Mare, late but finally we can write you a comment as well : Me and my friend Sophie spent two weeks at the farm in March. Although it was quite a short stay, we were able to experience a lot. We recommend this place for everyone who enjoys the silence of an island and want to get to know Estonian Culture and Language which is very beautiful. And not to forget: The dog Brianna. The walks with her were one of the best. Amandine and Charlotte were a big help in our farm.
