Diyarbakir is a city in southeastern Turkey. It lies on the right bank of the Tigris River. Known as Amida in ancient times, the city is still surrounded by its ancient black basalt walls. Rule of the city changed hands frequently until its capture by the Ottomans in 1516. Today, a large portion of its population is Kurdish.
