Puerto Morelos is a city located about halfway between the major tourist hubs of Cancun and Playa del Carmen in the Quintana Roo state in southeastern Mexico. It lies along the Caribbean Sea and is home to a population of approximately 9, people. Most residents are locals, but the population of ex-pats, both full-time and part-time, has been increasing in recent years. Highway divides the city and provides easy access to other nearby communities. Puerto Morelos, one of the oldest communities in the area, is a traditional fishing village and offers a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of the larger tourist areas nearby. Its location is ideal for those who want to live close to amenities, but not necessarily in the middle of noisy larger cities. Spanish is spoken here for the most part, but with an increased number of English-speaking ex-pats, English is becoming more common in the area. Most people travel to Puerto Morelos by flying into Cancun and taking a bus or shuttle to the community. The Croco Cun Zoo offers interactive to minute guided tours through an outdoor facility that houses a variety of animals, including deer, macaws, crocodiles, snakes, spider monkeys, parrots, and insects. Visitors can feed, hold, and touch many of the animals safely, under the observation of trained staff members. The zoo also offers an opportunity to walk with crocodiles in a safe environment. Visitors can take photographs of their experience at the zoo. The Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin Botanical Garden, established in , features a variety of ferns, palms, cacti, and fruit, ornamental, medicinal, and other types of plants. It is one of the largest botanical gardens in Mexico, and is located on the last patch of conserved forest between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. The garden has a 4-km trail through forest areas that lead to a traditional Mayan house, as well as a Mayan archeological site. Puerto Morelos also offers a variety of other activities, including diving, snorkeling, swimming, hiking, playing sports, boating, and fishing. Tourism has become an important economic contributor in Puerto Morelos. Increased numbers of shops, tourism outfitters, accommodations, restaurants, and other service-based businesses have helped to establish the community as a desirable tourist destination. Puerto Morelos also has a number of natural and cultural attractions that draw people to the area. The city is known as a retirement community to some extent, though the option to work remotely or run a business remotely from the area is available due to phone and internet connections although these can sometimes be expensive. Along with an increase in tourism and ex-pat residents, the area has seen increased real estate business, both for permanent or part-time residency, as well as investment properties that are rented to tourists. This area includes high jungle that is home to a variety of flora and fauna, and is much less susceptible to flooding than the lower-lying areas. Also located here are shops, residential areas, accommodations, schools, grocery stores, spas, service providers, parks, restaurants, government offices, pharmacies, shopping malls, a post office, a gym, a sports complex, tourist attractions, and churches. The section is home to many locals. The section immediately east of Highway is known as Colonia Pescadores. This section includes mangrove forest areas, residential areas, a botanical garden with Mayan ruins, shops, a medical clinic, a few restaurants, churches, service providers, tourist attractions, a large football field, and baseball diamonds. The section located along the coast, east of Colonia Pescadores, includes the downtown area also known as Antiguo Puerto Morelos , as well as the areas known as the North Area and the South Area. The downtown area is a popular spot for tourists, and includes beach areas, plenty of restaurants, shops, service providers, tourist attractions, parks and gardens, a health centre, pharmacies, a dock, accommodations, tour outfitters, the town hall, spas, shopping malls, and schools. The North Area includes mostly accommodations, beach areas, restaurants, and some shops. Accommodations, restaurants, tourist attractions, the marina, and beach areas can all be found in the South Area. Single-family homes often include private yards, and some also offer private pools. House design is often a mix of traditional and modern, giving a unique feel to many neighbourhoods. Many residences are located in gated communities here, and the most expensive homes sometimes have private beach areas. Most condo buildings are newer and offer amenities such as shared pools, security, and private balconies. Condos near the waterfront tend to fetch higher prices compared to those located farther inland. Vacant land here can be very expensive, as can larger investment properties.
