This article aims to offer an ethnographic account of substances and sex and how they are interrelated in the context of one holiday destination popular among British youth. Current research on British youth abroad and their use of substances is based almost exclusively on survey methods. Similarly, the same research works do not explore, in sufficient detail, sexual relations outside of those purely between British tourists. The article is based on 38 focus groups, observations, and informal conversations undertaken in San Antonio, Ibiza during the summers of , and The paper complements current knowledge on sex and substances abroad by discussing the role of promotion representatives, strippers and prostitutes, and the use of drugs and alcohol, emphasising how substances feature in the promotion of sex. Current research is almost exclusively based on sex between tourists; therefore, sexual encounters with other social players in holiday resorts have been largely neglected. Briggs, D. But just this month a British beauty therapist, who was two weeks short of her 21st birthday, collapsed on a nightclub dance floor and died after apparently taking Ecstasy. Hundreds of teenagers stay on campsites outside the town then flock to its beaches armed with cheap alcohol bought with fake IDs. Sun, sand, booze and hormones do not necessarily make the glamorous cocktail the youngsters imagine. In , two teenagers plunged to their deaths from the same cliff within a week of each other. One of them, year-old Paddy Higgins, had been drinking heavily. A third teen broke his neck in a similar fall. The town has now launched a clampdown on lewd behaviour in a desperate bid to stop it becoming a no-go area for families. The campaign includes a ban on crude inflatables, sexually explicit antics and T-shirts with offensive slogans. Police have also been confiscating alcohol and sending teenagers home to their parents after finding them drunk.
