More or less just shops selling souvenirs of mixed quality. Mostly real local handmade craft. Never the less it is a nice traditional stone step streets and imposing slate-roofed houses. The characteristic The bazaar area in the old town is quite small. The shops all look the same from the outside and there are not the greatest of variety of products. I understand this area has been restored. A shame it appears to be all the We really enjoyed our visit, but thought the bazaar was larger. They are working on it and it looks like there will be new stores soon. Not much variety in the stores that are there. The bazaar has been restored but the affect of that is that it has become somewhat sterile. All of the shop fronts are now identical and it all seems to lack any real character. I found a very rare Communist era books. Enjoyed the walk through the streets, admiring the brightly coloured rugs etc displayed on the walls and shop windows. For me this bazar was unusual because the items on display were exotic and different. The colors was bright and enticing. I bought several Albanian hand knit socks, they were beautiful. What fantastic work the knitters had produced and so little money they probably were The smell of car exhaust and constant traffic is annoying. Lots of souvenir shops and restaurants. You will not miss it when in Gjirokaster. I only suggest it for nice weather though, sitting outside is very nice. Inside area is small and I did not enjoy it much.
