One of the few good things about spring is that many ski areas reduce their lift ticket rates; Greek Peak NY just did so with lower rates kicking in on Sunday…elsewhere in NY, Bellearyre announced some really cheap rates through the end of the season for college students…and speaking of the Empire State, it looks like some branch of government or tourism office is planning to start up bus service from Toronto and other Canadian cities , to bring skiers directly to a half dozen New York ski resorts. Bear Valley is located in the western foothills of the Sierras and is probably the closest area to San Francisco, but suffers from the usual ski area ailments — not enough snow brings not enough customers which results in not enough money. Aksel Lund Svindal finished fifth and thus moves some 50 points ahead of Marcel Hirscher in the overall. Anna Fenninger was sixth, moving a scant 11 points ahead of Hoefl-Reisch in the overall standings. Both the men and the women are in Lenzerheide with final competitions ramping up with the downhill tomorrow. Barring injury, Hirscher can likely win the overall just by skiing safely. Seems to me Svindal is still a bit under the weather. Oddly enough it appears that Fenninger has a great chance to win, as Hoefl-Riesch is battling a flu type thing as I type this. Fenninger is a threat to win each of the other events. Shiffrin has garnered the slalom title, while Svindal has both the downhill and super G titles. Young Mr. Bush led the law enforcement officials on a high speed chase all the way to Ludlow, where he violated the 35 MPH zone by a factor of three. The vehicle was recovered after Bush stuffed it into a snowbank and fled on foot. Anyway, kudos to the ski patrol and local rescue teams, as every single patron was downroped without incident…much more exciting kudos for the ski patrol at Crystal Mountain in Washington State; they were doing avalanche control and the resulting slide wiped out the High Campbell chairlift, an old center-pole double. Why do we thank the patrollers? Thanks to the Crystal ski patrol, who forced the slide, the only harm was to the lift. The University of Vermont surged from also-rans to second place, but it was too little too late. University of New Mexico was third and defending champs University of Colorado was a distant fourth. Early leader and host team University of Utah stumbled in the later events and finished fifth. Two big stories on the alpine side; both in slalom. We should mention that in addition to the big ski powerhouses, there are plenty of single entry skiers from small colleges around the country who qualify and compete, and we salute their courage.
