Kristen Stewart ’s initial collaboration with Olivier Assayas , Clouds of Sils Maria , was so critically successful that it earned her a history-making César , making her the first American actress to ever win the award. Since the win, Stewart re-teamed with the French filmmaker for Personal Shopper , a horror film set in the fashion world that debuted at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday evening. And for the project, the actress takes another bold step in the direction of serious cinema—and away from the tween-targeted Twilight franchise—by appearing partially nude.
During a press conference for the film on Tuesday, Stewart was asked about that decision. And the actress revealed why appearing topless was a key component to portraying her character Maureen, an American personal shopper in Paris who is isolated by her thought process.
“I am playing someone who is so stuck in this cerebral state and so disabled by over-analysis that. . .the idea of being physical to another person is impossible,” Stewart explained. “It's just not going to happen. She flits back and forth between that and actually being the most realized, absolutely present animalistic version of herself.”
“I wasn't afraid of [the nude scenes],” she continued. “I will do anything. I really appreciate all of it. The only way to really show someone who really couldn't connect the dots was to show extreme versions of a person that wouldn't typically go together. . .the movie is really about her finding herself. . . it's an enormous identity crisis movie and I really leaned into that. I wanted to be the most naked person I could be. . .The only way to do that is to really get naked.”
Stewart also discussed why she was eager to play a character on the flip side of her celebrity—someone who is actually able to go out into the real world and do things that she, because of her international fame, cannot.
At times, Stewart said, she feels incapable of doing simple things like going to a store that “logistically can prove not worth it” because of the hectic paparazzi swirl that would ensue.
“Sometimes I do feel a little bit like I've had my limbs cut off, not to say that that is a bad feeling, it's just surreal,” said Stewart. “Maureen is so capable. She is incredibly tactile and she's incredibly physical so it was fun to play someone who was so . . . just capable.”
Stewart also explained her working relationship with Assayas and why she enjoys collaborating with him so much.
“We don't talk to each other a whole lot,” Stewart explained. “But there is a communication that is undeniable. There is a flame that he lights under my ass that is stronger than I have ever felt. . .I really try to navigate my career by feel and I just feel him. The idea that he can be the catalyst of a thought process and really allow me to have it and lets it be mine is a really good feeling like you are creating something with someone rather than satisfying someone. . .It is a different version of the job. I like both, but I like this more.”
The film, which has earned mostly positive reviews, received a few boos at the end of the premiere—not for the quality of the movie per se but its controversial final moments. During the press conference, Assayas was asked about the reaction.
“It's interesting because it happens to me once in awhile when people just don't get the ending,” the filmmaker said of his projects. “Movies have a life of their own. . .we had not screened it [beforehand] so we had no idea of knowing how it would play with an audience. It is a very intense, very powerful moment and it is more like. . . I suppose it [is similar] with giving birth or something. . .
As he trailed off, another co-star deadpanned, “Now imagine giving birth and being booed while doing it.”

She's taken on the role of vulnerable and brittle Maureen, who's caught in the midst of a brutal murder in the upcoming flick Personal Shopper.
And in titillating new stills from the eagerly anticipated psychological thriller, Kristen Stewart can be seen stripping off to bare her cleavage as she lounges around in bed.
The 26-year-old actress sports a deadpan expression as she looks into the distance, while a male hand leans in to touch her assets.

Despite the saucy element of the scene, Kristen boldly channels her character as she reclines on her bed.
The American star, who is currently dating model Stella Maxwell, then proceeds to stand up - further flaunting her topless front.
Another raunchy scene shows the Twilight star heading to her walk-in wardrobe where she casually undresses yet again.
Kristen, who dons nothing but a pair of barely-there underwear, is seen nonchalantly singling out a bondage-inspired bralet.

Kristen's new flick, which centres on a ghost story set in the fashion underworld of Paris, sees her character grieving the death of her twin brother, and spends time at his French home determined to make contact with his spirit.
The movie has received rather mixed reviews thus far, but it seems reviewers are not blaming Kristen for the quality of the picture.
Indeed respected RogerEbert.com reviewer Barbara Scharres said: 'Whatever Stewart's shortcomings, writer/director Assayas is the guy who has to stand up and take a bow for this bomb.'

Meanwhile, while many would be nervous about stripping off for the camera, Kristen - who debuted a funky new peroxide blonde buzz cut at the LA premiere of the film on Tuesday - described her topless scenes as 'empowering'.
Speaking to E! News , she explained further: 'Not because I was taking my clothes off, but just because I was getting to the most primal part of the [character], finally, someone who’s really closed off.
'So then I felt like they were the most revealing, but also the most empowering scenes.'
The film's director Olivier Assayas, 62, previously worked with Kristen on the 2014 film Clouds of Sils Maria and admits he was impressed by the young actress's ability.

After his proposed heist thriller Idol’s Eye was cancelled at the last minute in November 2014, Olivier wrote Personal Shopper with Kristen in mind.
In an interview with the Financial Times , he said: 'But I honestly didn’t think she would do it. I knew how daring she could be, but I thought she would find it too abstract, too weird.'
'She was not very protected, but part of the fun both for me and her was to have her on her bike, on the Metro, really meshed within the city. In New York, they would close the subway.'
In addition to her passion for film, Kristen also has an eye for fashion and graces the cover of V Magazine 's spring issue.

The star, who is an ambassador for Chanel, is a longtime fan of both the French luxury brand and its head designer Karl Lagerfeld.
'Karl has always, from the very beginning, made me feel like being myself was the right thing to do,' she said.
'And in [the fashion] world, that is a rarity. He’s a compulsive and obsessive artist and it’s contagious. And he’s kind. He is who he is for a reason. I feel so lucky to be in his space so often.'
Having bagged the Cannes festival’s Best Director award, the film will be released in UK cinemas on March 17.

Sally La Pointe Pre-Fall 2017 Collection
Kristen Stewart attended the premiere of her latest film Personal Shopper in Los Angeles this week and she looked almost unrecognisable.
The actress had decided to shave off her hair and dye it blonde so she looked totally different. She stuck to her usual style though, always favouring trousers and jumpsuits on the red carpet.
The star chose a crop top by A.L.C paired with high waisted trousers by Sally La Pointe for the event, showing off her fabulous figure.
The trousers were pretty unusual with their corset style waistband in a sheer material. They make up part of the brand's pre-fall 2017 collection so you cannot snap them up just yet, but click right to browse the current line at Farfetch.

Stewart, 26, revealed why she felt it was important to appear topless in her upcoming film Personal Shopper , explaining that it was a key part of her character.
