When it comes to nudity and sex scenes in film, Kristen Stewart thinks Americans need to lighten up.
The actress, 26, is promoting her new film Personal Shopper , and recently spoke with W Magazine about appearing nude in the upcoming French indie.
“I wasn’t apprehensive,” she explained. “I feel super great with director Olivier [Assayas], as well. The scenes in which I don’t have clothes on or the scenes that seem ‘risqué’ from an outsider’s perspective, there was no acknowledgment on his part.”
Stewart said part of her director’s nonchalant attitude was cultural: “They’re very f—— French.”
Americans, on the other hand, “are weirder about s— like that.”
Stewart also argued that the nudity plays an important role in character development. “My personal feeling about that is that I’m really unashamed, but within the context of the story, there’s a lot of shame … So it’s kind of nice to see someone stripped and bare, totally bare. There’s a strength in it.”
Likewise, the sex scenes in Personal Shopper serve a purpose in understanding her character. “There’s an aspect of sexuality in the movie that’s so lonely and that is just one of the saddest things. She’s not with anyone. Like the sex scene? Totally alone. She’s interacting with a fake person on a phone.”

The scene is a “raw” visualization of her character’s loneliness, “and without that stuff it would be a different thing,” she explained.
Stewart said she is not attempting to “de-sexualize” nudity, but noted that “at the same time, I’m not weird about it.”
She added, “I’m pretty open. I think people are a little too f—— weird about it, to be honest, but that’s kind of why I was like, ‘I’ll do it.’ ”
Personal Shopper hits theaters Oct. 19.

Kristen Stewart on Her Nude Scene in Personal Shopper : 'I Wanted to Be the Most Naked Person I Could'

Kristen Stewart isn’t afraid to bare all on screen – in more ways than one.
Stewart, 26, revealed why she felt it was important to appear topless in her upcoming film Personal Shopper , explaining that it was a key part of her character.
“I wasn’t afraid of [the nude scenes],” she said at the Cannes Film Festival, according to Vanity Fair . “I will do anything, I really appreciate all of it. The only way to really show someone who really couldn’t connect the dots was to show extreme versions of a person that wouldn’t typically go together … the movie is really about finding herself … It’s an enormous identity crisis movie and I really leaned into that.
“I wanted to be the most naked person I could be,” she continued. “The only way to do that is to really get naked.”
In the film, Stewart plays Maureen, an American personal shopper living in Paris who is haunted by her own thoughts when she begins to believe she is in contact with her dead twin brother. (Watch the trailer below.)
“I am playing someone who is so stuck in this cerebral state and so disabled by over-analysis that the idea of being physical to another person is impossible,” she explained.
The filmed, which screened at the festival on Monday, received both applause and boos from the crowd.
Director Olivier Assayas – with whom Stewart worked on Clouds of Sils Maria , which nabbed Stewart a Cesar Award in France – discussed the mixed reaction to the film, saying he doesn’t necessarily take offense to it.
“It happens to me once in a while where people just don’t get the ending,” said Assayas, according to THR . “For me, it’s the closest I can get to a happy ending. I’m sorry I can’t get much further.”
Personal Shopper hits theaters Oct. 19.

And in titillating new stills from the eagerly anticipated psychological thriller, Kristen Stewart can be seen stripping off to bare her cleavage as she lounges around in bed.
The 26-year-old actress sports a deadpan expression as she looks into the distance, while a male hand leans in to touch her assets.

Despite the saucy element of the scene, Kristen boldly channels her character as she reclines on her bed.
The American star, who is currently dating model Stella Maxwell, then proceeds to stand up - further flaunting her topless front.
Another raunchy scene shows the Twilight star heading to her walk-in wardrobe where she casually undresses yet again.
Kristen, who dons nothing but a pair of barely-there underwear, is seen nonchalantly singling out a bondage-inspired bralet.

The movie has received rather mixed reviews thus far, but it seems reviewers are not blaming Kristen for the quality of the picture.
Indeed respected RogerEbert.com reviewer Barbara Scharres said: 'Whatever Stewart's shortcomings, writer/director Assayas is the guy who has to stand up and take a bow for this bomb.'

Meanwhile, while many would be nervous about stripping off for the camera, Kristen - who debuted a funky new peroxide blonde buzz cut at the LA premiere of the film on Tuesday - described her topless scenes as 'empowering'.
Speaking to E! News , she explained further: 'Not because I was taking my clothes off, but just because I was getting to the most primal part of the [character], finally, someone who’s really closed off.
'So then I felt like they were the most revealing, but also the most empowering scenes.'
The film's director Olivier Assayas, 62, previously worked with Kristen on the 2014 film Clouds of Sils Maria and admits he was impressed by the young actress's ability.

After his proposed heist thriller Idol’s Eye was cancelled at the last minute in November 2014, Olivier wrote Personal Shopper with Kristen in mind.
In an interview with the Financial Times , he said: 'But I honestly didn’t think she would do it. I knew how daring she could be, but I thought she would find it too abstract, too weird.'
'She was not very protected, but part of the fun both for me and her was to have her on her bike, on the Metro, really meshed within the city. In New York, they would close the subway.'
In addition to her passion for film, Kristen also has an eye for fashion and graces the cover of V Magazine 's spring issue.

The star, who is an ambassador for Chanel, is a longtime fan of both the French luxury brand and its head designer Karl Lagerfeld.
'Karl has always, from the very beginning, made me feel like being myself was the right thing to do,' she said.
'And in [the fashion] world, that is a rarity. He’s a compulsive and obsessive artist and it’s contagious. And he’s kind. He is who he is for a reason. I feel so lucky to be in his space so often.'
Having bagged the Cannes festival’s Best Director award, the film will be released in UK cinemas on March 17.

Kristen Stewart attended the premiere of her latest film Personal Shopper in Los Angeles this week and she looked almost unrecognisable.
The actress had decided to shave off her hair and dye it blonde so she looked totally different. She stuck to her usual style though, always favouring trousers and jumpsuits on the red carpet.
The star chose a crop top by A.L.C paired with high waisted trousers by Sally La Pointe for the event, showing off her fabulous figure.
