We are currently in residency at our sister restaurant, Bambolina . You can now get both Kokeshi, and Bambolina at the same place! We have both full menus out of one location so you no longer have to choose. Order from one menu, or both! Online ordering is also combined. Click below to order takeout from both restaurants, and pick up everything from 288 Derby Street.
Welcome to Kokeshi! Our name derives from the hand-painted, wooden Japanese dolls steeped in tradition from a time beyond memory. Those of you familiar with our other restaurant, Bambolina, might recall that Bambolina loosely translates from Italian as “baby doll”. See a pattern? Through the names of our restaurants, we pay homage to our daughters and celebrate the strong young women who inspire our hard work.
Kokeshi is a dining experience that brings bold, authentic flavors to historic Salem from a different part of the world. We want you to explore Asian street food in a casual atmosphere with a bit of fun. We approach the concept full on. Our menu includes ramen and a number of tasty small plates. This comfort food has soul, and it has a place here on the North Shore. The dishes are recognizable but everything has a hint of exotic flair.  The vast wealth of Asian cuisine allows us to cook with the seasons and maintain culinary integrity which is, of course, paramount. We hope to respect the craft through continuously learning, reading, and refining our skills and techniques.
We have dedicated our professional lives to food because we steadfastly believe that food can strengthen community bonds like nothing else can. Kokeshi is the result of decades of travel and experience creating new concepts and dining experiences. Thank you for allowing us to cook for you!

Explore the origins and history of the kokeshi with over 200 examples from the collection of Itske and Anthony Stern.
Kokeshi were originally produced and sold in northern Japanese villages as souvenirs to the areas’ hot springs. Different towns created their own take on the simple style with variations in shape, painting method, design elements, facial expressions, hair and head designs, structure, and color. These variations became the basis of the ten “classic” styles of kokeshi.
Rapid industrial development and advances in technology allowed kokeshi artists to start a trend of “creative” or sosaku kokeshi after World War II. While generally conforming to traditional construction, sosaku kokeshi feature carving, designs painted in untraditional colors, asymmetrical shapes, or added accessories. Some of these sosaku designs evolved into new forms of mass-produced kokeshi, which came to represent the whole of Japan and not just one particular region.

An avid collector of both Japanese antiquities and traditional nativity sets, Sharon spent many of her years in Japan searching for something that would represent both her interests. Inspired by an image in a magazine, Sharon had the idea for a Kokeshi nativity set. Working with a local Tokyo Kokeshi dealer, Sharon contracted with an artist to create the first Kokeshi nativity set. After sharing her idea with friends, Sharon found that many people shared her passion. As word spread, Sharon realized the demand for this unique collectable and Kokeshi Designs was born. Today Kokeshi Designs offers both original Kokeshi sets and one-of-a-kind dolls.
After spending her adult life traveling the world, Sharon Larsen developed a passion for Asian art and antiquities. Through her travels, Sharon had collected pieces from many countries including Japan, Korea, Thailand, China, Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Nepal. Having lived in Japan for nearly twelve years, Sharon had a particular interest in Japanese art and culture. Today, as the founder and president of Kokeshi Designs, Sharon shares her love of traditional Asian art with a worldwide community of collectors.

I began my love of Kokeshi dolls collecting vintage kokeshi. I would go to all the "shrine sales" as they call them in Japan and look for the vintage Kokeshi....
