Korea Basketball Development Institute Resumes Operation of 'Global Friends Multicultural Children's Basketball Team'


The Korea Basketball Development Institute (Director Cheon Soo-gil) announced that it resumed the operation of the Global Friends Multicultural Children's Basketball Team, which had been suspended due to COVID-19, on the occasion of "World People's Day," and conducted the "Hana Day with Basketball" program with Hana Tour.


"Global Friends" is a multicultural children's basketball team sponsored by Hana Tour, one of the three major multicultural hope projects of the Korea Basketball Development Institute, which helps more than 30 multicultural and non-multicultural children improve their right values, healthy bodies, confidence, and self-identity through cooperative sports "Basketball" and talent donation activities.


The Korea Basketball Development Institute held a kickoff event to announce the resumption of the basketball team's operation through an exchange program between the "Global Friends" team and Hana Tour executives and employees to mark "Worldwide People's Day" on May 20. Through this, "Global Friends" plans to sequentially carry out not only regular training but also participation in various competitions, training camps, sports exchange events, and cultural experiences.


The Korea Basketball Development Institute added that basketball is an excellent means of social integration that anyone, regardless of race, religion, class, or age, and Global Friends will help multicultural children gain positive experiences through basketball, improve their multicultural awareness, and grow into a leading player in the future society, and contribute to the integration and harmony of Korean society that has entered a multicultural society.


According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a society where the proportion of foreigners per country exceeds 5% is defined as a "multicultural society." The National Statistical Office expects the proportion of foreigners in Korea to increase sharply from 3.2% of the total population in 2022 to 5.7% in 2042.
