The most common type of computer memory is a dynamic random access memory (DRAM). The DRAM is the most commonly used memory because of its low cost and high speed. The most important characteristic of DRAMs is that they are volatile memory, meaning that the data stored in the DRAM is lost when the power supply is turned off. To compensate for this, DRAMs have a refresh mechanism that forces the data to be written back to the memory cells on a regular basis.
