Kolkata Braces for Unseasonal Heavy Rainfall: Traffic Snarls and Waterlogging Reported

Kolkata, October 25, 2023 – In an unexpected turn of events, Kolkata experienced unseasonal heavy rainfall today, catching residents and authorities off guard. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted light showers, but the city was instead drenched by torrential downpours that lasted for several hours, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

The rainfall, which began in the early hours of the morning, intensified by midday, with areas like Park Street, Salt Lake, and Behala reporting water levels rising to knee-deep in some places. Commuters faced significant delays as major roads, including EM Bypass and AJC Bose Road, were inundated, causing vehicles to crawl through the waterlogged streets.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has deployed emergency teams to clear clogged drains and pump out water from affected areas. 'We are working round the clock to address the situation. Our teams are on the ground, and we urge citizens to avoid venturing out unless absolutely necessary,' said a KMC official.

Local businesses, particularly those in low-lying areas, reported losses as water entered shops and disrupted operations. 'This is the worst I've seen in years. We weren't prepared for this kind of rainfall in October,' said a shopkeeper in Gariahat.

The IMD has attributed the sudden downpour to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which has intensified moisture inflow into the region. 'This is unusual for this time of the year, but climate variability is becoming more frequent,' explained an IMD spokesperson.

Residents have taken to social media to share images and videos of the deluge, with many expressing frustration over the city's inadequate drainage system. 'Every year it's the same story. Why can't the authorities fix this?' tweeted one user.

The weather office has forecast more rain over the next 48 hours, urging citizens to stay alert. Schools in several areas have declared a holiday for tomorrow as a precautionary measure.

As Kolkata grapples with the aftermath of this unexpected weather event, questions are being raised about the city's preparedness for such extreme conditions, especially in the face of changing climate patterns. For now, Kolkatans are keeping their fingers crossed, hoping for clearer skies ahead.
