The training of high-level specialists requires the active introduction of pedagogical technologies into the educational system of higher education that contribute to the development of higher-order thinking. In addition, the development and testing of technologies for the development of critical thinking in higher education in Russia encounter significant difficulties. Materials and methods. The methodological basis of the study is a competency-based approach to teaching a foreign language based on the technology of critical thinking through reading and writing. Experimental research, consisting of setting, ascertaining, training, and control stages, was carried out in the Petrozavodsk State University in — It was attended by first- and fourth-year undergraduate students of non-linguistic fields of study. For a comparative analysis of the data obtained in different groups of subjects, the Wilcoxon statistical test was used for related samples. On the final cut, the experimental group demonstrated a significantly higher level of critical thinking at the 0. The developed training course is interdisciplinary and can be used in different fields of study for undergraduate and graduate programs. Keywords: critical thinking, technology for developing critical thinking through reading and writing, foreign language communicative competence, media literacy, media competence, universal competencies. The purpose of the research is to investigate the educational potential of the foreign language as a university subject and to verify theoretically and practically the possibility of developing critical thinking skills of students in the process of foreign language acquisition at the tertiary level of education. The student age is a sensitive period for the development of the intellectual sphere of an individual especially in general and critical thinking. The research about critical thinking suggests that this type of thinking is a category of interdisciplinary knowledge and represents a set of certain skills: reflection, goal setting, decision making, problem-solving, and other skills. The thrust of the current study was to investigate the extent to which the books employed for Teaching English as Foreign Language include critical thinking skills. To attain this goal, 3 series of English books, namely, Top notch, Interchange, and English files series utilized by language institutes in Iran were targeted. Next, a seventy two-item critical thinking checklist based on Likert-scale and consisting of twelve skills; namely, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, deduction, induction, balanced-thinking, multiple perspective-taking, creative thinking, building community of thinkers, and knowledge was developed. The checklist was validated by the researchers themselves and some experts in the field and the reliability coefficient was also estimated at 0. Then, two raters conducted a content analysis on the books and determined the magnitude of each skill. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and inferential statistics Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis Non-parametric tests. The paper also discusses the lack of critical thinking in the classroom and materials and proposes some ways to include more critical thinking skills in the materials. The results of the study have significant implications for material developers, educational policy makers and teachers. International Journal of Management and Humanities, , The paper deals with the development and assessment of critical literacy skills of teacher education students in Croatia based on the discussion and written analysis of online opinion-based texts. The pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was used to assess student critical literacy skills. Results indicate significant improvement in the tested skills when comparing the pre-test and the post-test results. The findings are seen as an incentive for further research and development of education materials related to critical literacy. The teaching profession, by its very nature, requires teachers to develop themselves continuously, to keep up with the innovations emerging over time, to acquire the competencies they require, and hence keep themselves updated. In our time, in which the developments have gained an enormous pace, particularly in technology, this requirement has become vital for teachers whose contributions to shape societies are immense. With the recent advances in technology, it has become of great importance for teachers to learn the emerging new media culture and use them effectively in their lessons. On the other hand, as a result of these rapid developments, the acquisition of critical thinking, which dates back to ancient times as a concept, by teachers as a skill has become more important than ever before. At this point, there are evaluations made regarding the importance of these two skills primarily in teacher training programs. In line with these evaluations, this study examined the relationship between the critical thinking dispositions CTD and their new media literacy levels NML of pre-service English teachers studying at the education faculties of two foundation universities. Results showed that the candidates participating in the research have high level critical thinking and new media literacy skills, and there is a moderate positive relationship between these two skills. The competence in quick navigation of information flows, making informed and responsible decisions, determining own position based on moral and ethical attitudes are becoming essential soft skills for the modern student. Such skills are acquired through constant intellectual development, critical thinking, focus on moral values, and so on. Therefore, obtaining a profession should be accompanied by the formation of personality, which will be marked by the necessary level of soft skills for society, professional growth, and especially developed skills to think critically. Such task becomes relevant in the process of foreign languages teaching, which helps the student to facilitate the process of integration in particular into the market of international vacancies and in general to understand better the trends of the modern world and the place of a person in it. Following the relevance of the study, we have identified the following tasks: based on research by various domestic and foreign scientists to discern how to stimulate learners to think critically; to analyze the basic innovative teaching methods included in the course of English for Specific Purposes. The practical significance of the obtained results is that the analyzed teaching methods of foreign languages for the development of critical thinking can be used in practice in higher education programs. Accordingly, the most substantial task for modern students is to learn to accept new information, control it, question it, combine it, process it, adapt it or discard it. Educators, in turn, must develop the intellectual and creative abilities of learners, their capacity to acquire new knowledge and comprehend it on their own, to process different sources of information. Oh, Kyung-Ae. Developing critical thinking skills through a mandatory English course in higher education. English Teaching, 72 4 , The purpose of the study is to investigate whether critical thinking skills can be fostered through a college English course. Approximately eighty female Korean students taking a basic freshman mandatory reading course participated in the study. The researcher taught them critical reading skills along with other reading comprehension skills and provided them with Korean local context in the given topic. The students critically read two units of the required textbook and attended presentations of high school students with minority cultural backgrounds. The students submitted four online reports about multiculturalism, and they were analyzed using a thematic analysis. The results revealed that even students with relatively low English proficiency could enhance their critical thinking skills by practicing critical reading. Also, additional information about local contexts not only compensated for a culturally limited text but also facilitated the development of critical thinking. The findings indicate that teaching critical thinking is feasible in an English language course despite limited environments. Yet, more studies are required to generalize the findings. The aim of this paper is to present the results of our analysis regarding the development of critical thinking skills for the subject Macedonian language for specific purposes 2, research conducted in the online teaching period in the academic The appearance of COVID virus in March and the pandemic that it caused seriously affected the educational process. But the well-established Google Meet and Google Classroom platforms have proven to be a solid foundation for teaching in extraordinary circumstances at SEEU. Our goal in the past period was mainly aimed at developing and improving the critical thinking skills which are clearly defined in the syllabus. Definitions of the term critical thinking are given, as well as the results of our research regarding the development of critical thinking skills during online teaching. In terms of methodology, for each skill an exercise was given, which was assessed by the professor and the students received feedback. Our researc This research aims at examining and analyzing the potential that textbooks in the field of Languages and Communication provide in achieving the competence: student as a critical thinker. The data on the textbooks is collected according to the Delphi report, which is used as a standardized report in available published research on the development of critical thinking. The file extracted from this report is used as a research tool. In Kosovo, 85 Grade-5 students were involved as participants in the report as well, while the data was collected through a survey by the questionnaire for students utilized as a research tool. Mixed method was selected for research design since it includes both quantitative and qualitative research methods, while descriptive analysis method was also used during the textbooks review. The results obtained from the research indicate that the textbooks used by Kosovo students in elementary school which contain the highest potential for critical thinking development are Reading 5and Exploring English 1, while the textbook that has the lowest potential for critical thinking, is Albanian Language 5. The most developed dimensions in these textbooks are Interpretation and Analysis, while the least developed dimensions are Assessment and Inference of knowledge. Critical thinking is generally claimed to be an essential requirement to effective learning and productive living. In a world of rapid change and globalization, skills such as problem solving, decision making and critical thinking are believed to be particularly acute for engineering graduates. Accordingly, this study has attempted to investigate the extent to which critical thinking skills are important in the English course in engineering preparatory classes. The findings of the study revealed that both CPGE students and teachers are aware of the importance of critical thinking at the professional, academic, social and personal levels. The findings also revealed that the teaching and assessment of critical thinking is done in an explicit way in the CPGE English classes. Critical thinking has been used and debated since the time of great philosophers such as Plato and Socrates. Its real origin is deeply rooted in the logic and questioning process used by these early philosophers. In recent times many scholars and researchers have conducted studies concerning the benefits and effects of critical thinking skills in different disciplines to the extent that now we are speaking about critical thinking movement whose benefits are much discussed in educational curricula. The aim of this study is twofold. First, to see the possibility of integrating critical thinking skills in reading courses; second, to investigate the attitudes of the students towards such integration of critical thinking. Two research tools were used: an experiment followed by a questionnaire. The findings revealed that after the experiment, which consisted of exposing the students to tasks involving critical thinking when dealing with the reading skill, the students developed an awareness of critical thinking skills and dispositions. They developed the ability of interpretation, analysis, inquisitiveness, truth-seeking, problem-solving, evaluating information and decision making. Besides, their attitudes towards the integration of critical thinking while dealing with reading were reported to be positive. The project, called 'Development of Engineering Tools for the Prediction of Flame Spread', had the aim of increasing the knowledge of flame spread modelling both with respect to thermal flame spread models and pyrolysis models. This report concentrates on the thermal theory models for flame spread. There are special situations where specification limits on a process are implemented externally, and the product is typically reworked or scrapped if its performance does not fall in the range. As such, the actual distribution after inspection is truncated. Despite the practical importance of the role of a truncated distribution, there has been little work on the theoretical foundation of standardization, inference theory, and convolution. The objective of this research is threefold. First, we derive a standard truncated normal distribution and develop its cumulative probability table by standardizing a truncated normal distribution as a set of guidelines for engineers and scientists. We believe that the proposed standard truncated normal distribution by standardizing a truncated normal distribution makes more sense than the traditionallyknown truncated standard normal distribution by truncating a standard normal distribution. Second, we develop the new one-sided and two-sided z-test and t-test procedures under such special situations, including their associated test statistics, confidence intervals, and P-values, using appropriate truncated statistics. We then provide the mathematical justifications that the Central Limit Theorem works quite well for a large sample size, given samples taken from a truncated normal distribution. The proposed hypothesis testing procedures have a wide range of application areas such as statistical process control, process capability analysis, design of experiments, life testing, and reliability engineering. Finally, the convolutions of the combinations of truncated normal and truncated skew normal random variables on double and triple truncations are developed. The proposed convolution framework has not been fully explored in the iii literature despite practical importance in engineering areas. It is believed that the particular research task on convolution will help obtain a better understanding of integrated effects of multistage production processes, statistical tolerance analysis and gap analysis in engineering design, ultimately leading to process and quality improvement. We also believe that overall the results from this entire research work may have the potential to impact a wide range of many other engineering and science problems. We have been together for over 17 years. You are the love of my life, my strength and support. You have brought the most joy to my life and have been a source great learning and healing. I am so proud of each one of you and have a great love for you all. We also initiate a very tentative meta-analysis to obtain a more synthetic view on the various evaluation results. We finally conclude that harmonization and increased comparability in evaluation studies would be useful to bridge the gab between evaluation and policy design and implementation. The power quality of the electric power has become an important issue for the electric utilities and their customers. In order to improve the quality of power, electric utilities continuously monitor power delivered at customer sites. Thus automatic classification of distribution line disturbances is highly desirable. The detection and classification of the power quality PQ disturbances in power systems are important tasks in monitoring and protection of power system network. Most of the disturbances are non-stationary and transitory in nature hence it requires advanced tools and techniques for the analysis of PQ disturbances. In this work a hybrid technique is used for characterizing PQ disturbances using wavelet transform and fuzzy logic. A no of PQ events are generated and decomposed using wavelet decomposition algorithm of wavelet transform for accurate detection of disturbances. Journal of Environmental Planning and Management, Gas-lifted oil wells are susceptible to failure through malfunction of gas lift valves. This is a growing concern as offshore wells are drilled thousands of meters below the ocean floor in extreme temperature and pressure conditions and repair and monitoring become more difficult. Gas lift valves and oil well systems have been modeled but system failure modes are not well understood. In this thesis a quasi-steady-state fluid-mechanical model and a transient thermal model are constructed to study failure modes and sensitivities of a gas-lifted well system including the reservoir, two-phase flow within the tubing, and gas lift valve geometry. A set of three differential algebraic equations of the system is solved to determine the system state. Gas lift valve, two-phase flow, and reservoir models are validated with well and experimental data. Sensitivity analysis is performed on the model and sensitive parameters are identified. Failure modes of the system and parameter values that lead to failure modes are identified using Monte Carlo simulation. In particular, we find that the failure mode of backflow through the gas lift valve with a leaky check valve is sensitive to small variations in several design parameters. To address the failure modes studied, a positive-locking, thermally-actuated safety valve is designed to shut off flow through the gas lift valve in the event of failure. A prototype of the positive-locking valve is constructed and thermal actuation is tested.
