I am pretty sure we are minimal risk of malaria based on where we are going and time of year. I'd quite like to not take any malaria drugs due to the side effects etc, just wondered what people think about that? Malaria is nasty. Think carefully, even if going to a low risk area, about protection. U have to read up on the areas but last time I went and I went similar places to you - anti malarials were not recommended and I've never met anyone who took them for Thailand. First time I went I didn't even have any injections. Yes malaria is nasty but so are the side effects of the drugs I've read about. Have a read up though and ask your GP. I've been a couple of times; taking anti-m's the first time and got really sunburnt even through sunblock. Pretty much everyone i spoke to on that trip had said they weren't taking them, but i didn't know if this was a balanced risk accepted by intelligent grown-ups aswell as the w ky traveller types i met and asked! I've been a couple of times. It's not even been a consideration to be honest. Decent repellent is where it's at. Dengue fever is more of a concern than Malaria. I'm in Thailand a lot, Malaria is not a problem don't even think about it. Dengue is a bigger problem and there is no drug for that, the Dengue carrier is active all day and it exists in cites around standing water. In twenty years in the tropics including 2 in west Africa and 5 in Borneo I've never known any one get Malaria, I know hundreds with Dengue, the biggest killer of tourists in Thailand is motor bikes. Don't start reading about all the weird and wonderful diseases we have here. It will make you a hypochondriac when there's really no need. Just to make my point my best mate who has lived in Asia for 35 years and knows his way around, was admitted to hospital this morning in Malaysia with Dengue fever. GT03ROB 13, posts months. I think honestly the only serious advice that people can give here is to look up the official advice and comply, you'd feel a bit silly if you got malaria after listening to some blokes of t'internet who told you not to take the drugs. To add my own thoughts the the rest however, I've been to thailand a load of times, and never taken anything. As others have said i wouldn't worry about malaria, even when i was in the high risk areas of Cambodia i did not take anything for malaria as there has not been a single case of it in years and i would suspect its been even longer since the last case was in Thailand. Remember a jumper for Chiang Mai, very jealous about Lipe! I am more than capable of googling 'malaria symptoms'. The point of the thread was to weigh up the risk of contracting malaria probably very small likelihood but a high-ish and importantly a known impact against the risk of drug side-effects high likelihood, moderate impact. Just had a text from my mate in hospital, they want him in for two weeks and then a week at home, with Dengue, The thing with Malaria is the carrier only fly at dusk so it relatively easy to avoid, long trousers and shirt sleeves, I lived in Angola at one time at that was all we did, local residents don't use Malaria drugs because of potential liver damage over the long term, personally they make my eyes burn. Dengue on the other hand is active all day, you need to avoid standing water, Most of S E Asia has laws that are supposed to prevent standing water accumulating, but of course they are not enforced. The old wife's tail is that gin and tonics are good for preventing Malaria as it contains quinine.

Pita now says the cannabis boom should be put on pause to curb widespread recreational use until the incoming government can pass a proposed Cannabis Act to draw clear lines on where the drug can be sold and consumed. To form a ruling coalition, with Pita as premier, they need to secure seats to have a parliamentary majority. Currently, they have As the politicians bicker, cannabis advocates are increasingly upset about the clouds gathering over their industry. It makes no sense. For investors, the legal uncertainty has sapped confidence in an industry that flourished in the year following decriminalisation. Not to mention other supported equipment for growing etc. Cannabis has become strikingly visible in Thailand since the kingdom — which once had harsh penalties for possession — suddenly transitioned into one of the most liberal environments for its sale and use in the world. Taking advantage of the legal vacuum created by the failure to pass the Cannabis Act, Thais and tourists alike smoke openly on the streets and illegal imports — mainly from North America — have flooded the market, giving plenty of ammunition to critics of libertine cannabis culture. For Kobboon Chatrakrisaeree, a small-time grower in a Bangkok suburb, the initial euphoria that followed decriminalisation has tapered off. By Vijitra Duangdee.
