Koh Lanta is a very relaxed island where you can spend your days island hopping, lounging on the beach, diving, volunteering at Lanta Animal Welfare , or slinging back a beer while watching the sunset. When we were staying close to the ferry pier in the northern part of the island, we were wandering about the town one night after yet another delicious dinner of Pad Thai and we found a night market. Not only was there tonnes of barbecued food, but some of the skewers were weirdly shaped and colored as different Angry Birds. We played it safe with the barbecued chicken and it was juicy, tender, and oh-so-sweet. The food is cheap and, for the most part, delicious. There were also dozens of clothing and accessory stores in this night market. This was definitely the most bizarre part of the Koh Lanta night market. When we finished walking through all the different shops, we came into what I can only name as the Cabinet of Curiosities obviously stolen from Cirque de Soleil. At first it was just a bit strange — walking past a small crowd of people playing BINGO and various other carnival games. As we walked out from under the tented area there were trampolines, a pathetic merry-go-round, and some blow-up slides with children playing on them. There was a scantly clad woman dancing to hip hop on the chair, enticing intoxicated men to pay for a chance to soak her you can watch the video here. My mouth literally dropped at the sight.. On my right there were kids having the time of their lives on these carnival rides and only a few feet away this perplexing adult-only dunk-tank entertainment was happening. Even though the Koh Lanta night market was extremely odd, I did really enjoy it. But I have no idea what it is… it looks prehistoric! It is a horse shoe crab! Hi I like your articles thank your for sharing I would like to know where this market is located exactly? Thank you!! Thanks, Marion! Hope that helps! Those are horseshoe crabs! They are seen all over the east coast of the US. I had NO idea people ate them!! A lot of skewers etc there also. I have eaten at markets all over Thailand, but in this case I got really sick. There is a stall that had skewered balls, fish cakes etc in a sweet chilli broth. Oh, no! Now this is my idea of camping. We sailed up to Debotunay Island just as the sun b. For me, the undisputed high point of our time in Thailand is on Koh Lanta. The journey is long, so we are relieved beyond words to get to a bed, any bed. This can be arranged through your accomodation in Phuket, or directly at the ferry wharf on the day of. What to do: Aside from lazing on the beach, enjoy fresh coconuts and delicious curry meals at Monkey Bungalow ; venture into town for authentic Indian at India House ; buy an inflatable mattress at one of the nearby roadside markets and spend the day floating in the warm water ; or, best yet, catch a small passenger and motorbike ferry to Koh Lanta Noi , the impossibly picturesque and largely undeveloped island to the north. Our days are spent in hammocks or on inflatable rafts drifting out in the 28C water or zipping around the uncrowded island on motorbikes. We decide to adventure out one day and ride until we see a small island close enough to swim to. Of course, the water is shallow, so we end up riddled with small cuts, but we also end up with photos like this:. Another adventure sees us riding north to catch the ferry to Koh Lanta Noi, the even quieter north island. We explore much of the coastline and eat lunch at a local spot, delighted by the authentic Thai feel. It is everything I ever wanted in my island holiday, and then some. This is what I pictured Thailand to be before actually travelling here and realising it is quickly losing its local charm to swarms of tourists. If there are more places like this, it will be my personal mission to find them. But I think, more than anything, Koh Lanta reminded me that places like this do still exist. Not everywhere is full of tourists, and while I enjoyed Bangkok or Koh Tao as much as the next person, there is something special about having the beach to yourself. In , I finally fulfilled my dream of becoming a full-time nomad! I positively loved Vietnam, especially the food and the people. From Hanoi, I bused into Laos and visited Vientiane and Luang Prabang, taking a several day trek out to some more remote villages and natural sites, including an elephant sanctuary where we bathed elephants. I travelled south to Phnom Penh in Cambodia, and also spent time exploring temples in Siem Reap, before flying to Bangkok. All of this travel lasted a little over a month, and then I spent the next month island-hopping down both the east and west coasts of Thailand. I can highly recommend spending a week on Koh Tao getting very inexpensively dive certified. February 24, TAGS: best beaches mother nature opt outside. The Comments.
