Since I last wrote 2 weeks ago, we have had SO many adoptions!
Every single Spartan was adopted (each went to a separate home).
Caroline went home with her new mama.
Maverick went home with his new mama and a kitty from another one of our foster homes.
Miami went home last night with his new family.
Palmetto should be picked up by her new family tonight.
My math skills tell me that is 7 adoptions in 2 weeks!
Adoptions mean there are new fosters in the house! But before you meet the new ones, let me remind you of the 2 fosters you already know and love who are still here:
Sweeney and Ebony . These boys have really blossomed with the change of foster room residents! Can’t wait to introduce you to the new additions!
I caught my three solid black kitties cuddling up together yesterday
(The Spartans were spayed on Saturday, hence the shaved belleh)
I ordered a bunch of scratchers for the kitties on Amazon last week. You’ve already seen that the Snuggle, Scratch and Rest was a hit with Caroline . Ebony immediately went for the flat scratcher with elevated edges-there was a huge drool puddle by the time he decided he was finally willing to share with the other cats! I can’t emphasize enough the importance of giving cats with claws plenty of places and different surfaces that are okay for them to scratch. Their claws naturally shed the sheathes around them and cats need places to do that. Scratching also releases their scent from glands in their paws onto the scratcher, making the cat feel like he’s marked his spot and he’ll be more comfortable. This style is now part of the permanent rotation at our house!
The sweet fosters who are currently at our home (in alphabetical order):
She is so playful now that she’s recovered from surgery!
She looks sad in this photo, but really she is keeping an eye on “her” kittens in this photo.
His fur on his belly is finally growing back! We have decided that his overgrooming was due to the stress of the shelter and then new foster home.
Don’t you just want to kiss that face?? He’s perfectly happy to let you.
I love the asymmetry of his markings!
Ebony began his life in a feral cat colony. One of the people who works with the Trap, Neuter, Release program found him and his two sisters on her first visit to the colony. She guessed they were about 4 months old and thought there might be a chance to domesticate them. One sister warmed up to the pampered, indoor life right away. Ebony and his other sister remained scared and resistant for the next 4-5 months. When it became clear that they were not making progress, the volunteer and our coordinator decided that splitting them up would give them the best shot at being able to be indoor kitties. The coordinator asked if I would be willing to work with Ebony-of course I said yes! I have 2 large cat cages with different level/shelves that allow me to keep scared or sick kitties separate from the other cats, but still keep them in the foster room. This made my house a perfect place to try and work with Ebony. By keeping him in the cage, I could get my hands on him and track his progress. If let him loose in the room, he would continually hide and progress would be very slow, especially in a room with other cats.
Ebony spent his first 2 weeks cowering behind the litter box in his cage. It was awful. He was terrified. He sometimes would come flying out of the cage and hide under the bed when I opened it to clean the litter box and give him new food and water. It was a nightmare. I asked the volunteer who had been working with him to come visit and see what she thought. She visited and spent about 30 minutes with him, holding him and talking to him. Reassuring him that he was in a good place and that I would take care of him. Amazingly, it made all the difference in the world!! The next day he stayed up on one of the shelves while I cleaned up the cage. He watched me carefully, but he wasn’t hiding and he wasn’t shaking. Every tiny change meant progress!
After a month of bribing with tuna (mixing his medicine for his diarrhea with tuna was the only way I could medicate him. There was NO WAY I would be able to hold him and get a pill or liquid down his throat) and slow movements, Ebony is a whole new cat. He greets me at the door, rubs up against my legs and begs for attention. While he still isn’t comfortable with anyone else, yet, I believe he will get there. He likes the other kitties in the room and will make a great pet for someone eventually! Just a little while longer, and he should be ready for adoption. I’ll keep you updated on his progress!
I’ve had the same foster cats, with no changes, since early April. You’ve already met these guys:
But you haven’t met Ebony. Here he is (the picture is wretched, but it’s the best I have for now. He’s hard to photograph!):
And Romeo, Maverick’s brother ( remember him? ) was adopted, and recently returned. He arrived at our house on Friday. We’re hoping to find him a better foster situation-he is not a fan of other cats, which makes our foster room an unhappy place for him to be. But for now, the kitties are working out boundaries with each other.
The situation was improved slightly last night. I took Henri and Sweeney to Petco! The boys became best friends in the past few months. Photographic evidence below. I hope they get adopted quickly. They’ve both already been in the cages at Petco before, and I don’t want them to have to be there for another few months.
Aren’t they precious?? Good luck, boys!
