We've all seemed to wonder if our parents had secret favorites , but what if your parents got divorced and literally chose kids ? Well, that happened to Smitten reader Kristin...
When my parents got divorced, my dad choose my sister to live with him and my mom choose me to live with her. I didn't know it was weird at the time, since I was so little. My parents moved away from each other, and it became harder for my sister and me to see each other and the other parent.
My mom always said that I was a baby and needed my mother. She doesn't even mention how my sister might have needed a mother, too! My sister says she didn't want our dad to be alone so she chose to go with him. I honestly feel like that's how she's been able to accept the situation because that way it makes it HER decision versus about someone not choosing HER. Isn't that terrible? Not to mention that it's a huge decision for an 8-year-old to have to make. And my dad will hardly talk about it. He'll just make "jokes" about how he or my mom (depending on which of us was acting bratty at the time) "got the good one."
It gets even more complicated because my mom re-married, and I ended up having step-siblings and half-siblings that I adore. My sister resented my closeness with my step-siblings, while I resented all the one-on-one time she got from a parent. Not to mention that my dad is very successful and I grew up with little money.
Also, it was a bad divorce, so my sister felt like she had to defend our dad and I felt like I had to defend my mom. My relationship with my sister and my dad definitely suffered because of the decision. We're all close now, as adults, but it's been a hard road.
In the end, I try to view my parents as human and give them the benefit of the doubt that they made the best decision they could at the time. And it's in my power to be close with my sister and my dad now, and I'm glad to say that I am. Thankfully, when my sister became a mom, she and our mom bonded over that. And I'm very business-minded like my dad, so we talk all the time about work. Isn't that funny? We both ended up a lot like the parent we DIDN'T grow up with. Go figure. We should be a study in nature versus nurture.
