Japan’s Kinki University in Osaka has changed its name to Kindai University hoping to no longer be source material for ‘kinky’ related jokes.
Even though the word “Kinki” means “the capital and surrounding areas” in Japanese, the school decided it was time to drop the name and avoid more obviously unfavorable associations.
With an official ceremony the university unveiled the new English nameplate at one of its gates with athletes in attendance wearing uniforms bearing the new moniker.
The name-change decision was made two years ago, reports Japan Today. Since the school wants to place greater emphasis on foreign languages and international studies, it believed the previous English name, pronounced identically to “kinky,” was off-putting to foreign students.
“I did not feel good about the giggles which were caused when introducing myself at academic meetings abroad,” said University President Hitoshi Shiozaki.
“The word kinky also means perverted,” Shiozaki told reporters in a 2014 interview. “We have no other choice than to change the English name because we are serious about pursuing a more international school culture.”
The new name “Kindai”, is an abbreviation of the university’s Japanese name, “Kinki Daigaku,” which will remain unchanged.

Lecturers at a university in western Japan could be forgiven for dreading the moment they have to introduce themselves at international conferences. Their institution's academic pedigree is not in doubt – but to the non-Japanese ear, the mere mention of its name is enough to prompt fits of giggles.
After years of politely tolerating the sniggering of their English-speaking colleagues, the staff of Kinki (pronounced kinky) University have had enough.
The university, named after the region of western Japan in which it is located, will in future be known as Kindai University , said its exasperated dean, Hitoshi Shiozaki.
While the word Kinki holds no potential for humour among Japanese speakers, Shiozaki said he was aware of the mirthful connotations of its English homonym.
"The word kinky also means perverted," he told reporters, according to AFP. "We have no other choice than to change the English name because we are serious about pursuing a more international school culture."
University officials hope the name change will not only put an end to the laughter, but also encourage students, who might otherwise be put off by the name, to take part in its international exchange programmes.
Staff and students will have to grit their teeth for a little longer, however. The new name – a contraction of Kinki and Daigaku, the Japanese for university – is not due to take effect until 2016, when the university opens its international studies faculty.

LOL, I LOVE that look on Chandrani's face (the perplexed look); she's turning me on, LOL. You know the drill: rendered in DAZ (3Delight, LOL); postwork in Photoshop CS6... Been playing around with the Soft Focus Photoshop action. It blurred the background quite a bit. You know these ladies; they're my original characters (from left to right): Niko (LOL, school violence), Chandrani ("OMG, it's Avalancher! What is he doing here?"), Carola ("Hey, are you paying attention!?? Hand me that smartphone before I send you to the principal's office!"), and Aegea ("Hhh! You like my body hair? Oh, how sweet!" ^_^) I gotta admit, Aegea's been turning me on, too, with that blonde hair. If you look at my gallery, you can infer that I'm not so impressed with blonde. BUT, this time is one of those exceptions!!! I was originally planning to use the Moscow State University (no offense and no puns) as the background; so, I didn't want to use black hair so everybody's hair can stand out from the background.... Niko , Chandrani , and Carola's hair colors were final. I had two redheads already. So, I figured blonde was the only option other than black...
