Two of this season's most shocking_ Mad Men_ moments have come courtesy of Linda Cardellini, who plays Don's neighbor-turned-mistress Sylvia Rosen. The first was the revelation that Don was cheating on Megan. The second occurred on Sunday night, when Sally Draper walked in on her father and Sylvia _in flagrante delicto. _The game that Sylvia and Don have played all season—the lunchtime trysts, the sneaky gifts, the hotel role-playing—has come to an explosive end, and we'll have to wait two more episodes to see which marriages survive the detonation. In the meantime, we can join the Emmy campaign for Cardellini, whose guest stint as Sylvia has completed her transformation from _Freaks & Geek_s' Lindsay Weir to an actress who can steal any screen. GQ spoke to Cardellini about Sunday's bombshell moment, those kinky hotel scenes, and crazy fan theories about Don and Sylvia's toxic affair.
GQ: What were you thoughts, watching that painful moment on Sunday?
Linda Cardellini: Well, I knew what happened, so the surprise was not the same for me. But it's such a terrible thing for a child to see. Poor Sally Draper goes through so much, there could be a whole new series about how she grows up after enduring her childhood. It's a horrible thing for a child to walk in on, but as an actress, it's a great, juicy part to be the one person Don gets caught with.
GQ: When you saw Sally, you looked like your worst nightmare was coming true.
Linda Cardellini: It really is Sylvia's worst nightmare. A few episodes earlier she tells Don, "Be happy that we got away with it." She doesn't want her husband to find out, and she almost feels guilty enough to want to tell her husband, and then they get away with it, and then they both slip up and get caught. So I think you're right: it is her worst nightmare. Other than it being Arnold or her son walking in on them.
**GQ: Tell me why you feel Sylvia re-initiated the affair. Was it as simple as she felt indebted to Don because of what he did for her son? **
Linda Cardellini: I think there are still feelings between the two of them, and I think it almost lends itself to what Bob Benson said to Pete: iIf somebody took care of you, would do anything for you, would you not have feelings for them? That could be how Sylvia feels, and that's why she goes back to something that she already ended. If a person does something for you that nobody else can, that's the most important thing in the world to you, then you're going to feel for that person at that moment.
GQ: Nobody knows much about their _Mad Men _roles going in. How early on did you figure out what kind of role Sylvia was playing in this season?
Linda Cardellini: Oh, very early on. The first episode I had, there were no lines. And Matt Weiner said, "I just want you to know that it's a great character, so don't worry." And I figured if I could trust anybody in television, Matt Weiner was the person to trust. So I just kept going with it, and enjoying the idea that I didn't know what was going to happen. By the end of the two-hour premiere, I knew that she was going to play a part in Don's storyline. But I didn't know that they would get caught.
GQ: During Sylvia and Don's scene in the Italian restaurant, we saw a streak of jealousy; she asked if Don would go home with a different woman if she wasn't there. Do you think there's something particular about Sylvia that Don is attracted to, beyond her being beautiful and available?
Linda Cardellini: Yeah, I definitely think there's something else that draws them together, and there's something that they find in each other. It's many things: I think it's sexual, and emotional, and some things they don't even understand themselves. I think that Sylvia, like Don, is impossibly good at cheating. Getting caught is something totally new for both of them.
**GQ: We've heard Sylvia talk a lot about feeling guilty, and not just over the affair; she tells Megan that she feels guilty when she watches TV during the day. How, in your mind, does she overcome that guilt to keep returning to Don again and again? **
Linda Cardellini: Being raised Catholic myself, I think people who are Catholic tend to carry a lot of guilt. It's almost a joke. But I think the thing about Sylvia is that she has these desires, and then she tries to quash them with her faith, but she's not very good at it. She's not very good at doing what she thinks she should be doing, even though she probably considers herself a pretty faithful person. And I think that she can separate the fact that she believes in God, and that she does the wrong thing sometimes. I feel like she believes she can sin and repent, and then, unfortunately, she sins again. _[Laughs] _And I also it's a good point to make, that her guilt plays into a lot of things. When she's talking to Megan, she feels very guilty, because of what Megan's going through and because she's the other woman. And then that guilt translates into something that is more selfish, which is jealousy. And then her guilt plays into her breaking it off with Don, and then her guilt plays into her going back to Don, in some ways. She feels bad for treating him so badly when he's being so good to her.
GQ: Why do you think he takes his money?
Linda Cardellini: Oh, I think it's just fun for her. Arnold probably has a tight grip on extra money in the house, and I think she wants to go shopping. [Laughs ] It's a fun little devious thrill.
GQ: That episode in the hotel was pretty racy. When you're reading a script for something like that, are you nervous or excited?
Linda Cardellini: It's both for me. To be that exposed on television is always nerve-wracking, but it's something that I haven't done very often, so I was excited about that. And I was excited about the way that their relationship changes in that episode. You know, you think you're just watching one thing, which is deviant behavior from the both of them, and it turns out to be something that actually really informs you about the relationship. The parts where she's alone in the hotel room are very interesting, as well as when he's there.
GQ: When my husband and I were watching that scene where Don leaves her alone, he asked me, "How long would you wait for me in a hotel room before it stopped being sexy and started being annoying?" I was thinking five, ten minutes max.
Linda Cardellini: [Laughs] I think that's the difference between them having an affair versus those of us who are actually in a relationship, you know?
**GQ: What do you think was the breaking point for Sylvia that led to her decision to end the affair? **
Linda Cardellini: I think his plan backfired, in a way. He left her there hoping that absence would make the heart grow fonder, but instead I think it was just an opportunity for her to listen to all the guilt that she has running in her mind. And, you know, the heat dies down a little bit when he's not there._ [Laughs] _She comes back to reality and realizes she has a son and a husband, and she can't just stay in this hotel room forever. She has to get back to her real life.
GQ: Has there been anything unexpected about the whole experience of being on Mad Men?
Linda Cardellini: Almost everything has been unexpected, except for the fact that I knew I'd be working with amazing people. But it's such an amazing experience, and it's such a thrill to be part of it. We had a panel two nights ago, and I was sitting up there with the cast in front of a bunch of the fans, and I was shocked about all the theories!
**GQ: Yes, I've heard a million Bob Benson theories. Are there theories about Sylvia as well? **
Linda Cardellini: There were some people who thought that Sylvia could have been the hooker from way back in Don's childhood—things that don't even line up time-wise, but it's really fun. Really, the people who watch the show, who compare it to great works of literature—I mean, it's just such an intelligent and interesting fan base. I am so proud to be on this show, and to have such a juicy part.
