Kings Stun Oilers in Overtime Thriller to Take Game 1 of Playoff Series

Los Angeles, CA – April 28, 2025 – In a heart-stopping opener to their first-round playoff series, the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in overtime at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday night.

Anze Kopitar played the hero, scoring the game-winning goal just 2:17 into the extra frame, capitalizing on a rebound off Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner. The victory gives the Kings an early 1-0 series lead in what promises to be a hard-fought battle between these Pacific Division rivals.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with the Oilers’ superstar duo of Connor McDavid (1 goal, 2 assists) and Leon Draisaitl (1 goal, 1 assist) leading the charge. However, the Kings’ depth proved crucial, as Quinton Byfield netted two goals and Adrian Kempe added another in regulation.

Oilers’ coach Kris Knoblauch expressed frustration over defensive breakdowns. 'We had chances to put this game away, but we let them hang around,' he said. 'We’ll need to tighten up for Game 2.'

Kings’ netminder Cam Talbot made 34 saves, including several key stops in the third period to force overtime. 'This was a huge character win,' Talbot said. 'We know Edmonton’s firepower, but we stuck to our game.'

Game 2 is set for Tuesday night in Los Angeles, where the Oilers will look to even the series before heading back to Edmonton.
