From one of the popular games in NDS, “The World Ends With You” comes Sakuraba Neku. He is a quiet boy who prefers to listen to his music than interact with other people. But Neku is no ordinary teenage boy, he has a strong imagination that allows him to use “psychic pins”. The picture is a little over-exposed, but it’s convincingly Neku. I love the hair and the headphones..! No wonder his nickname is “Phones”. Good job! Technorati tags: nanao, research, cosplay, the world ends with you…

These Kingdom Hearts cosplays aren't just incredible, but they look better than the games that they come from.
It's one thing to cosplay someone from a video game, but it's another thing entirely to take on a Kingdom Hearts cosplay. Sure, there are cosplay companies out there who are making it easier to embody your favorite keyblade-wielding heroes, but without a bit of a personal touch and the personality to make that costume shine, that's all it is... a costume.
When it comes to one of Square Enix's greatest franchises and one that's rapidly coming to a close (until the next dark seeker saga, fingers crossed!), doing a character justice is everything. Unfortunately, there were way too many breathtakingly amazing cosplays to fit into one article, so I've done my best to find the ones that really make both the characters, and the cosplayers, shine.
It's true what they say: Anyone can cosplay. What makes a cosplay good goes so much further beyond attention to detail and nailing the right shade in a wig, it has to embody your love and passion for a character as well. To cosplay a character is to share your love them and completely transform yourself to represent that character to the best of your ability, and that's why so many people choose Kingdom Hearts . Obviously, human beings are not built to have huge feet, hair that never looks bad, or eyes that turn yellow.
What is possible, though, is nailing a character to the point where they feel real. Cosplayers, prepare yourself for some serious cosplay envy, and cosplay newcomers, prepare yourself for some serious #goals. Oh, and also some potential spoilers if you haven't played all of the games yet.
Vanitas is one of my favorite villains in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. If you haven't played Birth By Sleep yet, then beware for spoilers with this one. At the beginning of the game, you can just feel something is off... Vanitas is the embodiment of Ventus's nonexistent darkness, courtesy of Master Xehanort. He becomes a final boss fight as well as someone you face off with several times with Aqua, Terra, and Ven, and also happens to be totally arrogant and rebellious. This cosplay is a ridiculously intense nod to him, both in costume detail, keyblade replica, and photoshopped "darkness."
Namine is relatively simple to cosplay, but therein also lies a problem. Because her costume is so simplistic as well as her overall look, you actually have to try harder to nail every single detail so that nothing stands out as not being similar. This cosplayer totally has it in the bag, though. Even her hair is an outstandingly close shade of blonde to the artistic memory-restorer. While her story might be tragic, as they often are when you're a nobody, you can't deny that she's a well-loved character deserving of a great cosplay.
Oh, Terra. Your story in Birth by Sleep paralleled Riku's so closely that it alone was cause for a serious case of the feels. What I love so much about this cosplay is the intensity. It almost feels wrong to consider it a cosplay, because this cosplayer clearly knew exactly how to display Terra's internal turmoil and the constant fight against the darkness within him. It's almost as if at the moment of this photo's conception, he was ready to give into the darkness and fight for his friend's lives... oh, wait.
Sephiroth isn't a rare cosplay to see when you're talking in terms of Final Fantasy VII , however, he's portrayed a bit differently in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Calling himself Cloud's "darkness," Sephiroth dons the black and red gear that's a bit more jazzed up than in the original Final Fantasy game or as seen in Advent Children . I don't know who this cosplayer is, but hats off to them for noticing the details and doing this right. Also, can we just admire that one lone black wing and his giant Masamune? Swoon.
Aqua might have been on a bathroom break for this picture, but it's pretty rad all on its own. Armor is a trivial nightmare when it comes to cosplaying, especially if you're inexperienced and unsure of what to do. Not only does this look unbelievably realistic, but even their personalized keyblades (or "chi" blade, in Ventus's case) are completely identical to the video game. Every curve, point, and angle has been carefully thought-out for these costumes and it definitely shows, just check out that Chi Blade.
This group cosplay seriously makes me wish that I had 13 friends I liked enough, who loved Kingdom Hearts enough, to cosplay Organization XIII. What can you say about them other than Axel/Lea is clearly the best member? Everyone hates Larxene mutually, Marluxia is awful, Xigbar is a pain to beat in a boss fight, and the rest... well, let's just say everyone has their own individual demons. This group knows what's up and how to do a cosplay justice... served cold, that is.
Sometimes you'll find a unique cosplay that's from a certain point in the game or, in this case, a certain world. It's a well-known fact that upon entering each world, Sora, Donald, and Goofy are all slightly altered to fit into that specific world. Everyone's favorite always seems to be the Nightmare Before Christmas world, where the three are given their iconic Halloween-y twist. Sora's look just seems to fit him in every way possible, and this is seriously one of the greatest individual cosplays I've ever seen. Halloweentown Sora forever!
We're not talking about Terra's Lingering Will, the optional boss fight from the Final Mix of Kingdom Hearts 2 . This cosplay does due justice to Terra's armored look, complete with a ridiculous keyblade that even I wish I had the talent to make. The crazy thing about Kingdom Hearts cosplays are all the tiny details that go into making the entire thing look so realistic and similar, and this guy clearly nailed every single one of them. Now if we just knew where we could get our hands on a keyblade that awesome, we'd be set.
Throughout the games, Sora gives fans plenty of material to go off of as far as choosing a solid cosplay goes. This portrayal of Sora as a heartless is so intense that for a second, I wasn't sure if it was a cosplay or a work of art... Turns out it's both! The eerie, heartless (pun absolutely intended) eyes, perfectly cowlicked hair and even the shadow shades on their clothing are impeccable. I can't imagine a humanoid heartless could get much more realistic than this. Now, where's Kairi when you need her?
I know I'm not alone in saying that Axel is one of my favorite characters from the franchise if not my favorite, period. This is the most realistic rendition of a cosplay I've seen from the series. Everything, even down to his hairline and the expression, gives you that rebel-turned-somebody feel that Axel, soon to be Lea if you've played Dream Drop Distance , is known for. I'm just going to say it, his face is flawless and so are his chakrams. Don't worry, we're all feeling the cosplay pressure now.
Check out the weapons in those hands! If there's anything the Organization is known for, it's everyone's individual power along with the weapons they use to absolutely crush you in the games. For example, Saix and his obnoxious claymore that was, literally in the video game sense, the death of me... more than once. Their weapons are what makes them individual and memorable, and their cosplays should be no different. Hats off to this group, they clearly know what's up.
A lot of times, capturing a cosplayer's expression makes all the difference in a photo. This is Roxas as an Organization XIII member and even though he had "friends" (in quotes because as a nobody, you technically don't have "feelings"), he still knew that something was amiss. This sad-faced Roxas, constantly looking outward, is so eerily reminiscent of the character we all loved so much... and the character that Axel and Xion loved, too. This cosplayer was easily able to embody all of those emotions which is pretty incredible.
Talk about a full-on Birth by Sleep cosplay. Do you think these cosplayers all went as a group or found each other later on? Either way, you can't deny what a great nod this is to the game that really started it all, complete with a lurking Vanitas and Master Xehanort in the background. Not only are the cosplays on point here, but the setup of their photography is pretty choice as well. A cover option for a live-adaptation of Kingdom Hearts, perhaps?
Since the release of the first Kingdom Hearts game, Sora has been a super popular cosplay. It's not that it's incredibly difficult, it's just the, um, feet thing that becomes a little bit tricky. As the games go on, you also start to notice that Sora's outfits have a little bit of a sway and build to them, something that's rarely achieved in real life -- Until this cosplayer, that is. Literally everything, from wig to giant feet, is completely accurate as far as a real-life Sora goes. Even the stance is incredible! Bravo.
There are no big feet with this cosplay, but he's definitely sporting some true-to-life Riku details. You can tell that a tremendous amount of work went into making this cosplay a complete rendition of Riku, even down to the checkered pattern and white shoelaces; details that most people wouldn't even care about. The crazy part is that this cosplayer actually looks like Riku. Maybe he's born with it, or maybe it's just the perfect balance of light and darkness.
You can cosplay Aqua, and then you can go one step further and actually cosplay Aqua in her natural element. Her best attacks in Birth by Sleep were water-based and elemental, which makes this cosplay not only true to life but absolutely stunning. From someone who's currently working on an Aqua cosplay, her outfit has so many little details that go unnoticed and her keyblade alone is a daunting task, but seemingly not for this cosplayer. Applause is required here, please and thank you.
You only need have watched Kingdom Hearts X (Chi) or played Union Cross to know exactly where this cosplay is from. The story of Kingdom Hearts X tells of a Daybreak Town and a world before the Keyblade War, where kids were being taught by four union leaders, Ava included, how to wield keyblades and by doing so, the "light." Ava was a peacemaker and a crucial part in training the future generation, responsible for the Vulpes Union. This cosplay is an awesome tribute to her and what she stood for.
We're not discriminating between characters here, which is why Cloud made the list for the best cosplays from Kingdom Hearts . Just like Sephiroth, his wardrobe is noticeably different from his original SOLIDER garb in Final Fantasy VII , and he definitely looks more refined and put-together in Kingdom Hearts . This cosplayer did a flawless job, from his buster sword all the way down to his SOLDIER-issued combat boots. We'd happily sit back and watch a dual between him and his filled-with-darkness brother from the same "mother."
I have to admit, I'm not the biggest fan of Sora and Kairi as characters, but the emotion between them isn't lost on me, either. Riku always seemed to be the third wheel, always making the sacrifices and saving them, but this photo tugs at all my heartstrings. When it comes down to it, the three are connected through their friendship and the love they have for each other. From that love spawns the light that allows them to fight the darkness. No words need to be said about the brilliance behind this cosplay group.
This is a powerful cosplay photo, if only for the sake of the story that transpired between Roxas and Axel. For two nobodies who weren't supposed to have hearts and weren't meant to feel emotion, they transcended their fate and became best friends. Standing back-to-back is a notable way of saying they've got each other's, no matter what. Not only are their cosplays super accurate, but everything about their acting is, too: typical Axel with his arms crossed in indignation, and Roxas with a hand over the heart he's not meant to possess.
I've seen a lot of Riku cosplays, but not too many that give a nod to Riku's blindfolded identity from Kingdom Hearts 2. There's a complicated history to why Riku dons this blindfold which is acknowledged at the end of Chain of Memories , but the gist is that it's out of shame for using the darkness, which at times is necessary, in order to complete DiZ's tasks. He is eventually able to balance both the light and the darkness within himself, which is what makes this cosplay such a stunning work of art.
If there's one super noticeable trait from Ventus' character in Birth by Sleep , it's the way he holds his keyblade. He grasps it in a backward sort of style, which isn't seen with any other character (yet, anyway) in the franchise. Not only is this cosplay super on-point, but it's even eerily accurate down to this cosplayer's stance. My heart feels for Ventus since he was essentially used as a puppet and put on display in the form of Vanitas, but this cosplay makes definitely makes him someone you wouldn't want to mess with.
It's pretty easy to see why everyone loves cosplaying Axel so much. Not only is he solid in his sarcasm, but he wears his heart on his sleeve even if he acts like it's made out of solid ice. This cosplay is a nice nod to the Organization XIII member who's so well-loved, and from the hair to the makeup, and even down the expression, it's all so accurate. What really gets me are those chakrams, though... they definitely look like they could do some damage, someone should put those things in a Squenix museum.
One thing we don't see a lot of is Sora's serious side. His purpose, really, is to bring humor, silliness, and an overall feeling of light-hearted joy to the games. Riku balances him out with his seriousness and Kairi, well, she's the glue. However, Sora definitely does have a serious side, even if it's not seen until the later games. This cosplayer totally brought that out and this cosplay makes for a downright tribute to the hardcore Sora we all want to see more of.
This cosplay is nothing but pure awesomesauce and amazeballs. Replica Riku was crazy intense in Chain of Memories , a game which I hated playing but totally loved the story of. Vexen's ability to create this monster of a character made for an intense boss fight and one that I wouldn't soon repeat. This cosplayer saw an opportunity and made a completely accurate cosplay, but did it with a feminine flair that comes off as totally unique without straying from the original character. Nailed it.
Let's break it down quickly: Roxas is the nobody to Sora but resembles both him and Ventus because of a heart-in-heart incident that you wouldn't know about unless you played/watched cutscenes from Birth by Sleep . Because he has both hearts, he's able to wield two keyblades: Oathkeeper and Oblivion, both representative of light and dark, respectively. This cosplayer totally owned Roxas because of this detail, along with the look on his face that says, "come at me, bro." Two fistbumps way the heck up for this one.
Ah yes, it's the villain everyone loves to hate. Taking the form of old Xehanort in Birth by Sleep , where he's actually referred to as Master Xehanort, this cosplayer did a stellar job in portraying the wielder of darkness himself. None of Xehanort's intentions are good, which is why by the third game he's got a new Organization XIII in the works, half of them being copies of himself. This cosplayer captured that darkness perfected, even down to his norted eyes that we're dreading seeing in Aqua come Kingdom Hearts III. Shiver.
I'm not sure if it's the eyes, insanely realistic keyblade, or the perfect shade of Aqua's blue fringe that set it off, but this cosplay is ridiculous. Aqua is by far one of the strongest characters in the franchise, only second to Riku in my opinion, after having served ten years in the darkness and fighting her heart out to save her best friends. She only cries once, and that's when she finds out that a little boy she once met will be the one to save them all... His name is Sora.
You have to admit it; Sora is iconically known for his goofball tendencies and ability to make anyone laugh at a moment's notice. That same internal light is exactly what this cosplayer brought to life in their rendition of Sora, complete with crazy hair and a face that only Donald and Goofy could truly love. Speaking of which, we're half expecting them to come bounding out of the woods behind him, this is so accurate... then again, it's not like Donald would do much anyway.
Just takin' things one boss fight at a time.
