Why This Topless Photo of Jaime King Is More Important Than You Think

She also happened to be lying on her stomach, topless, as some followers were quick to call out. And her response to their comments was epic, endearing, and an overall win for women. Here's why. Directly answering one fan's question ("Why is your shirt off?"), King wrote: "My shirt is off because someone went to take a picture of me and I don't believe that a woman should have to hide her body. It is only sexualized if one puts that energy on it. My body is just a vehicle that I am grateful for. People sexualized [sic] the female body, but if a man had no shirt on, the percentage of sexualization would drop dramatically. My parents raised me to be proud and free—that this body is something not to be ashamed of or hide—there is nothing but love

King's body-positive sentiments fall right in line with a bigger movement that's been growing on Instagram over the past year, the #FreetheNipple campaign (a.k.a. the effort to fight the Instagram policy banning visible nipples in photographs for women). The movement started last year around the time Rihanna 's account was shut down for seminude postings and *Vogue *creative director Grace Coddington had a cartoon—a cartoon —removed from the app (Note: It has since been re-posted ). First brought to Hollywood's attention by Scout Willis' impassioned essay , other stars such as Chrissy Teigen , Lena Dunham , Cara Delevingne , and Suki Waterhouse hopped on board in the following months, showing their support for women's nipple-showing in various Instagram-approved ways (think pasties and T-shirts printed with breasts). The idea is that women's bodies are no more sexual than men's, therefore if a man can show a body part, a woman should be able to, too. Even if King isn't explicitly revealing anything against Instagram's censorship policy, it's refreshing to see her—and others—use their social media platforms to have an open and honest discussion.
