Overwatch Wiki is a FANDOM Games Community.
An environmental kill is when a hero falls off the map after being applied a Crowd Control (CC) effect (typically stuns or knock backs). Only 1 hero can be awarded an environmental kill per kill, and if there are multiple CC effects, only the last one applied counts. Environmental kills count as doing damage equal to the victim's HP at the time of death.

Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan discusses the possibility of killing off one of the game's characters while still keeping them available on the roster.
Despite not having a dedicated story mode in-game, Overwatch is known for its expanding lore and diverse roster of characters, who are fleshed out in comic books, animated shorts , and more. Some fans have grown quite attached to these characters, and they should know that it's possible Blizzard may kill one of them off one day.
This is according to game director Jeff Kaplan, who confirmed in an interview with Kotaku that the team at Blizzard argues over whether or not they can kill a character, and if they did, which character would be on the chopping block. However, if Overwatch does decide to kill off one of its characters one day, it may not have as serious consequences on the game as one might imagine.
As explained by Kaplan, if Overwatch did decide to kill off one of its characters, that character would still be playable.
“We will not remove a hero from the roster. No one has to worry about that.”
Whether or not Blizzard ever ends up killing off an Overwatch character remains to be seen, but if it happens, it won't be for awhile. Kaplan said that he thinks killing off any of the characters right now wouldn't mean much because they haven't had enough character development yet. Eventually, through animated shorts and story-based events like the Retribution mission , characters may be fleshed out enough so that their deaths would have a meaningful impact on the game world and community.
Then again, it's hard to see how the death of an Overwatch character could have that much impact if they remained playable in the game. Of course, it would be difficult for Blizzard to permanently remove a character from Overwatch without facing severe backlash from the community, especially since some fans have undoubtedly purchased loot boxes with real money just to obtain some unique skins or other cosmetic items for their favorite character.
Regardless of whether or not Overwatch eventually kills off one of its characters, fans don't have to worry about that character being removed from the game. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see how Overwatch 's lore continues to expand moving forward.
Overwatch is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

obviously the title is sarcastic but people on here and elsewhere have been predicting the death of overwatch for a long time, i know there was a topic similar to this back in 2019(thanks to the your topic is similar to feature) but it just remains as true today as it did back then.
Overwatch 2 isnt going to fail like some have predicted
Alright. Next argument being: “It will be succesful at first, but its own creators slowly kill it. Just like OW1.”.
Remember when the forum was filled with “Project A (now Valorant) will kill Overwatch” threads? Everyone thought it was gonna be the next Overwatch and nobody believed that it was more a competitor to CSGO than OW.
Is Overwatch really alive if there isn’t a monthly “Overwatch is dead” post?
Wait you mean “[x] game is dead” and “[x] game release will kill [y] game” are hyperbolic in nature and nothing more ? Say it ain’t so!
Overwatch 2 isnt going to fail like some have predicted
Ironic to bring that up now considering OW2 now is trying to do exactly what lawbreakers did.

No worries. fortnite did that way before valorant
Is Overwatch really alive if there isn’t a monthly “Overwatch is dead” post
Possibly… But it’s not living til it happens daily again
I miss when it was both hugely popular and “dead” those were silly times
I remember when Overwatch launched Deathmatch FFA the same week that Lawbreakers launched.
The game is dead. We always see the same people, it’s full of griefers and cheaters.
Sure, the servers are still running but when was the last time you actually had a close game, an enjoyable game of Overwatch?
And Overwatch 2 is doubling down on every decisions that eventually drove players away in Overwatch. So yeah, there will be a few players. The question is, which game will have the most players, Overwatch 2 or Unreal Tournament 99?
OW2 now is trying to do exactly what lawbreakers did.
Imo Lawbreakers was much more aggressive with its “muh skill” marketing. In OW2’s case it’s an occasional line you hear in an interview if you follow development.
(And Lawbreakers looked like mud.)
that is what kept me away from lawbreakers tbh, marketing made me intimidated that it wasnt for me, overwatch or overwatch 2 marketing with all its issues has never made me feel like that
Lawbreakers i think was done for their aim tho at least as much as just crushed by other games, as i remember it was ment to be something for more pro/hardcore players, not for casuals that actually make most of gaming community.
So they kind of screw themself over at start imo.
marketing doesn’t matter. The gameplay does.
lawbreakers failed because tried to be hard for no reason and OW2 is trying to do the same.
Overwatch 2 isnt going to fail like some have predicted
That depends on what you consider success and failure in regards to OW.
Money? OW2 will turn a profit, if it didn’t already do so.
Player satisfaction? As if we, the players, really know what we want. Maybe as an individual, but as a mass of people we just want new shiny things.
Gaming revolution? Naah. We’re talking about a huge AAA studio. Get ready for OW3 and then OW Moderen Warfare, OW Black Ops, OW Origins, OW Odysey and OW Valhalla.
e-sports? They might retain presence but I doubt that it will be anything that can be called a success. You need have, and retain, a big player base to have a chance at big viewership.
I completely ignored that game and now that it is gone, I find myself regretting not trying it.
obviously the title is sarcastic but people on here and elsewhere have been predicting the death of overwatch for a long time
OW right now is dead, Blizzard and the devs killed it.
i remember that game but i never tried it as well. i think everyone could fly or levitate? kind of looked disorienting
here is a gameplay trailer from 2015… a long time ago lol
edit: here is a slower character less disorienting lol, i think he was tank-like with a bazooka
I honestly forgot all about Lawbreakers until this thread reminded me that it ever existed.
Folks do this for every shooter game dating as far back as the original Halo: Combat Evolved, perhaps even further than that, but I don’t recall hearing anyone talking about “DOOM Killers” video back in the days before webforums.
Meanwhile, here we are in 2022, yet nothing has ever “killed” Halo, nor DOOM, nor any other popular FPS that I can think of. Heck, the only FPS franchises that have truly died weren’t “killed” by a superior game so much as they were starved to death by their negligent or otherwise incompetent owners who failed to keep them going. (Looking at games like System Shock, Timesplitters, and most recently Crysis.)
OW2 launch will be a success when they dont mess up the servers like in any modern game…
Nothing really this year is a thread for the long term. Gundam should be no problem and that could be the “best” other game in that genre that would do something. But even then OW2 launches before it, has more known characters, will get a cool cinematic that hypes up people like hell and blizz put more money into the launch.
I really wish Gundam a good launch but I rather hope they reschedule the launch because otherwise we will have another Paladin situation but this time… F2P is also on OW side.
i wonder if it released at a bad time. on par with overwatch lol…
maybe if it released now it would have more of a chance? would be interesting…
