Non-Operational Units: Both units were not in operation. Due to humidity and fungus issues around monsoon season, hydroponics units remain non-operational. We understand that there is availability of grass on the hills after the rainy season, however we still expect the units should be in operation at least to a minimum capacity. In addition there were no signs of cleaning the shed net and area in anticipation of starting the units sooner. The maize seeds current cost is around Rs 30 - Rs 40 per kg, as compared to Rs 16 per kg 2 years earlier. We also came to know that for the past 2 seasons, while units were operative during summer, the maize farm was cultivated in their own farm land. Thus there was no need to purchase the maize seeds from the market. So while the cost of running the unit was essentially free there were no issues concerning the market price of maize. Now that the old seed stock is consumed, they feel pinch when buying the maize seeds at high market cost. Further the price comparison is not done against cost of fodder in the market, instead it is always compared with availability of free grass on hill tops and open land. Free vs any price would not justify the hydroponics anyways. Beneficiaries fail to understand the need of healthier cattle and the richness of milk quality and fat content demand in the society. Unit Capacity: After looking at things closely we felt that the unit of trays was likely never run with full capacity at any time for past 2 seasons, since the installation. We always asked to provide proof in pictures to show the operational unit. We did received pictures few times that shows trays filled with maize seeds, fodder growth, cattle feeding etc. The unit should ideally run in the batch of 20 trays on daily basis. The 10 sets of 20 tray each should show the fodder growth at varies stages from seeds, sapling to a grown plant. We never received any pictures in that quantity. That shows the units were never operational at its full capacity. Cleanliness and Maintenance: The area inside the shed net was unclean, with lots of weed and congress grown up to 6 to 8 inch tall. The water pipes were not in their proper place due to broken cable ties and the spray jets were clogged with calcium deposits due to hard water. It clearly showed signs of non-maintenance. There were other tools and wooden material lying on top of those trays. This clearly is an indication that the unit were never operative at their full capacity. We also got feedback about presence of rats and rat holes inside the shed net. Rats like to eat the maize seeds. At Dhangar Takli, we observed that the electronic timer was disconnected and the motor pump that supplies water to the unit was not in its place. We were told that there was electricity voltage fluctuations during rainy season, and they electronic timer was removed to protect for voltage surges. The motor on the other hand was removed as they wanted it elsewhere for some purpose. When asked we were told that the other beneficiaries have taken the cattle from goshala for various personal reasons. As such 20 some cattle is a good count for us as the unit max capacity is to feed about 15 cattle. However on the other hand this explains why there was hesitation from the main beneficiary on scaling the unit to a much larger capacity to feed all 60 cattle, the count that was originally in the goshala. We were treated very good and respectful during our visit. Multiple times they iterated that the hydroponics is a great setup to run that provide benefits to organic fodder to the cattle which helps to keep the cattle healthier and increases the milk quantity and fat content. They are happy about it. They also tried growing wheat plant and fenugreek from the same setup, although the later was unsuccessful. The statements were contradictive when compared to the ground reality. It appears that they like hydroponics setup as an emergency medium to grow fodder when the need arises due to lack of rains and drought. Открыть меню навигации.
