New research has uncovered some uncomfortable and tragic truths about Kiwi children: New Zealand has a secret world of child prostitution.
“They had accepted that they were worthless, that they were inadequate and that is how they saw themselves,” Social worker Natalie Thorburn, whose Masters studies were discovering the problem, told Seven Sharp.
“Kids were selling themselves for sex from 12, but there was this one instance where this girl was being sold for sex at nine.
“I think if you say to any Kiwi underage sex work, they'd say Thailand, places that aren’t here, places that aren’t in their own backyards.”
She began posting signs asking for young girls to anonymously share their story with her during hour-long meetings.
“They all really all really wanted help, but when they looked for it, they felt judged,” she said.
“I have to take a period of time after hearing them … cry or to feel or to sort of sit with the enormity of those stories.”
‘Yasmin’, whose childhood involved abuse, began selling her body for sex at age 15.
“There were kids as young as 13 -14 selling their bodies,” she said.
“You need the money. And if people are going to abuse you, then you may as well get paid for it sort of thing.”
Warren Ferdinandus from ECPAT, an organisation to prevent children’s sexual exploitation, said New Zealand was “still thinking that it is not a big problem”.
“If we catch it now if we address I know we could over the next decade make a difference in our society.”

An urgent investigation has been launched into a naturist club hosting free naked swim sessions to kids in a council-run pool.
But its fortnightly swims at Derwent Pool, near Malton, North Yorkshire , are now under scrutiny by officials.
The Gazette’s story uncovering details of the sessions prompted a flurry of online anger when it was published last night.
And now Ryedale District Council, which owns the pool, is investigating whether there is a “risk to the welfare of children”.
Lead councillor Luke Ives said: “Ryedale District Council takes its safeguarding obligations very seriously, including that of our contractors.
“While there is nothing wrong in the naturist club hiring the pool, it must be done in a way that does not give rise to any risk to children.
“I have asked that an urgent investigation takes place to ascertain the facts.
“If there is deemed to be any risk to the welfare of children, the council will not hesitate to take immediate action.”
Naturists from Teesside and further afield flock to the public pool for £5 naked swim sessions every fortnight.
Age, shape, race and background are “irrelevant”, claims the club, with under 18s encouraged to swim nude with the offer of free entry.
Its website states: “If you bring the kids (18 and under) we will even let them in free (max two per adult) but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.”
The pool and sauna offers the “best chance of a naked swim” in the North when its doors close to the public between 3pm and 5pm every other Sunday.
“Our swims are just like going to any council-run swimming pool except we don’t use swim-wear,” proclaims Ryedale Naturist Club’s website.
“If you have never tried naturist swimming before then give it a try, you have nothing to lose except your wet sticky cozzie.”
The club, run by ‘Janet’, said its sessions are a great way to make new friends, but insists no sexual activity of any type takes place.
It claims that the sessions, offered at the pool for more than 30 years, offer a “safe and friendly environment” for the whole family.
Ryedale Naturist Club privately hires the public pool from operator Everyone Active.
Membership costs £15 a year or £20 for couples, while visitors pay £5 for a swim or £4 to use the sauna.
All visitors are required to bring ID such as a driving licence, passport or utility bill.
The Gazette attempted to contact the club, and was told by ‘Janet’: “Why don’t you join us one Sunday and experience swimming in the buff? Then you can tell your readers all about it.”
