Is sex really safe -- and satisfying -- when you're pregnant?
For some women, being pregnant feels about as sexy as those stretchy maternity pants: not at all. For others, raging hormones, swollen breasts, and a newfound focus on the body is enough to put them "in the mood" for nine solid months.
If you're pregnant and raring to go -- and have your obstetrician's blessing and partner's interest --- by all means, enjoy yourself. But if the thought of sex makes you queasy, remember that all pregnancies are different, even for the same woman, and sexual responses are just as varied.
Some couples worry about whether having intercourse will hurt the baby or wonder if the baby can feel it. In healthy pregnancies, the uterus is an amazingly protective environment and provides a fairly thick barrier between the baby and the world outside --- even when the "outside" involves the inside of the vagina .
But certain situations may mean sex during pregnancy isn't wise. If you are at risk for preterm labor , your doctor may ask you to cut back on sexual activity or to monitor yourself for contractions after sex . Your doctor may ask you to stop having sex if you have certain problems during pregnancy such as vaginal bleeding or problems with your cervix or placenta.
That doesn't necessarily mean you can't enjoy many sexual activities. Using your hands or mouth on your partner might offer just the right sensation when intercourse is off-limits due to a complication such as early contractions or spot bleeding. While orgasms can cause uterine contractions, research indicates that in normal pregnancies, orgasms with or without intercourse don't lead to preterm labor or birth.
Pregnant couples should adapt their sexual positions. After five months, resting on the back can decrease the blood supply to the uterus. Sex positions such as side positions that support the abdomen or with her on top --- which doesn't put pressure on the abdomen --- may be safer. Of course, pregnant women should always avoid lying directly on their abdomens.
No matter what sexual challenges you may face during pregnancy, these obstacles won't last forever. And sex may be different in many ways after your bundle of joy arrives. For one, giving birth changes a woman's body, for better and worse. The plus side? The blood supply to the pelvis increases-that's generally good news for achieving orgasm. The downside is that the vaginal opening may be stretched and looser after giving birth vaginally, possibly decreasing sexual sensations for both partners. Regular Kegel exercises --- repeatedly flexing and releasing the vaginal opening --- can help restore tone.
What's important is that you and your partner keep communicating your desires (or lack thereof) during and after a pregnancy. Like your new baby, a relationship must grow and change to maintain its good health --- sexually and emotionally.

10 primary school pupils of Dhawabu Primary School in Kayole Estate were on Tuesday arrested by police after they were allegedly found engaging in a sex orgy.
According to a neighbour living in the estate, he was disturbed when he heard unusual noises from a nearby house and upon inquiry, he realized there were pupils inside the house.
“When I entered the house I found five boys and five girls. I began questioning them and they divulged that they had been dancing.
“I wondered how they were dancing without music and they declined to show me how they were doing it,” he said.
Enraged residents of the area, however, stated that this was the second day the pupils had been seen in that house and blamed the school’s administration for negligence.
“How can a standard seven or eight pupil come home without homework? They are very idle,” added another concerned parent.
It also emerged that one of the pupils might be suffering from a venereal disease and was spreading it to the rest.
The pupils were taken to Kayole Police Station where they spent the night but they pleaded with police to release them saying they would never engage in such again.
Police in the area said they would sit down with the 10 pupils and have a candid talk with them to get to the root cause of the matter.

"It's unfathomable on so many levels. For one, that it actually happened. For two, where it happened. For three, how often something happened," the mother said in an exclusive interview with Eyewitness News.
The woman, who asked to be identified only as Jane Doe, said her 5-year-old daughter was caught by a teacher inside a bathroom at school giving oral sex to a 4-year-old boy.
"I said, 'Where did you see this? How did you know that this was something to do? 'She said, 'I saw another little girl do it.' I said, 'Well, where?' 'Here at school.' 'When?' 'During nap time,'" the mother recalled.
Jane said investigators found no evidence of child abuse at her home. She provided us documents from the County of Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services showing the case was closed as inconclusive.
The First Lutheran Church of Carson School was cited by the California Department of Social Services for a sexual incident between kids. Jane's daughter said it wasn't an isolated incident.
"The way that she explained it, it was kind of like it was an everyday thing...from pulling the pants down to exposing themselves to, you know, trying to get somebody to put their mouth on the privates," said Jane.
Eyewitness News first broke this story on Friday when Richard McCarthy told us exclusively that his son often received oral sex at the school.
"It went down in the classroom, it went down in the bathroom, and it went down out on the playground," said McCarthy.
After seeing that story, attorney Greg Owens said more people started asking to join his lawsuit against the school and the church, so he is no longer planning to file it Monday. He is going to wait.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Carson Station says the story is prompting it to ask questions of various state agencies to see if any crimes were committed.
The school itself is set to close on Friday. School officials still haven't gone on camera, but told me off camera that they believe there were only two incidents involving inappropriate touching among the kids.
They said the school is closing because the director is leaving for personal reasons and no teacher wants the job. They insist student sex has nothing to do with the closure.
"I think they definitely tried to cover up the incidents," said Jane.
Jane pulled her daughter out of the school in October. She said her daughter is in public school now and doing better. As for Jane, the reality is still tough.
"As a mother, I tend to blame myself, thinking what if I had just asked the question, what if I could have found out somehow that this is going on," she said.
