In a creepy kidnapping out of “The Silence of the Lambs,” an upstate man abducted a 16-year-old girl and held her captive for months, chained to a wall in an elaborate basement dungeon, investigators said.
John T. Jamelske, 67, of DeWitt, a Syracuse suburb, is being held without bail on charges of kidnapping, rape, sexual abuse and sodomy.
At least one other victim has come forward to say she also was held in a labyrinthine underground vault in Jamelske’s basement – similar to the cellar where FBI agent Clarice Starling found a woman held hostage in the 1991 movie.
The dungeon, 3 feet below Jamelske’s lawn, is reached through a crawl space and several steel doors. It has at least two chambers, Syracuse TV station WTSM said.
Pictures of several women chained to a wall were found elsewhere in Jamelske’s house, cops said.
One photo was of a 26-year-old woman who two years ago told police she’d been held captive in a bunker. Her claim baffled investigators until Jamelske’s arrest, when the woman identified him as her captor, cops said.
Now police are combing missing-person reports in hope of finding Jamelske’s other alleged victims.
Jamelske was busted Tuesday after his teen victim – who’d recently begun traveling with him outside his house – sneaked a phone call from a bottle-recycling business to her sister, the Syracuse Post-Standard reported.
The newspaper said that when the sister asked whom she was with, the victim answered:
The teen’s sister called her fiancé, who used Caller ID to figure out where she was calling from. One of them called the bottle plant and asked a worker to get the plate number of Jamelske’s car. Cops used it to track him down.
Jamelske’s teen victim was never reported missing because she had a history of running away from home, police said.
Jamelske kidnapped her in October after he offered her a ride, cops said.
For four months, she was chained to a wall in the bunker. Only recently did Jamelske let her travel with him outside, police said.
Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh said the victim might not have sought help because she was psychologically dependent on her abductor.
“She didn’t seem like she was in any distress,” said the sales manager of a local car dealership, who told The Post-Standard he helped the victim make a second call to her sister before cops rescued her.
Jamelske’s son Paul told the newspaper that his father is “very quirky” – but added that they’re not close.

For 10 years, Tanya Kach, of McKeesport, Pa., was held as a sex slave under her abductor's complete control. Now, she's come out to tell her amazing survival story.
In 1996, Kach was a 14-year-old girl carrying around grown-up problems. Her parents were splitting up. And, like most girls that age, adjusting to the teenage years was tough.
Kach told Lynne Hayes-Freeland, of CBS Pittsburgh station KDKA-TV, "My mother wasn't in my life at that point. My dad completely forgot he even had had a daughter and we were living under the same roof, and I was hanging around with the wrong crowd."
That combination made Kach the perfect target for Thomas Hose. He worked as a security guard at her middle school, and they became fast friends. Meeting under the stairwell there, Kach says she believed she was starting a relationship with a man 25 years her senior -- a man who was taking charge.
Kach recalled, "He was an authority figure, wearing a uniform and a badge. (He was) somebody that you would trust, and he befriended me."
But Kach quickly got in over her head. When she ran away from home, she ran to Hose,- who was living with his parents and a son. Hose kept her hidden away in a second-floor bedroom for 10 years. Even his parents say they never knew she was there.
To the outside world, Tanya Kach was a missing milk carton kid -- thus the title of her book, "Memoir of Milk Carton Kid."
Kach told CBS News her life in captivity was "absolutely horrible." She says she was confined to a bedroom 24 hours a day and led downstairs to a take a shower at most once a week.
Hayes-Freeland asked, "There were times that you didn't have access to a bathroom?"
"He put a bucket in there, and said, 'That's your bathroom,'" Kach said. "I was just so brainwashed. I feel humiliated now. Absolutely."
Kach says her worst memories are the holidays, and Christmas Eve in particular. She spent four of them inside a closet on the second floor of the Hose home.
"It broke my heart," she said. "I thought of my family, wondering if they were thinking about me."
Over time, Hose allowed Kach to go on the back porch of the house when he was getting ready for work. She didn't leave because he promised to hunt her down and threatened her life.
"He would just point. I was like a dog," she said. "I did what my master told me. I went in the closet."
That lasted for years. Hose made Kach change her hair color and her name, and with those changes came limited freedoms. As she got out, Kach wanted more. She found a friend at a nearby convenience store and one day confided in him that her name wasn't Nikki at all -- but Tanya -- and she was the girl police had been looking for for a decade. He called police and Hose was arrested.
Thomas Hose, now 53, pleaded guilty in June 2007 to charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a minor, interfering with the custody of a child and child endangerment. A judge sentenced him to 15 years in prison. He is eligible for parole in February 2012.
Kach said, "He's an absolute monster. There's just no words to explain him."
What's next for Tanya Kach? She is working on an associate's degree and hopes to be a realtor.
Hayes-Freeland said on "The Early Show" that Kach plans to have her voice heard at Hose's parole hearing in February. Hoping to avoid seeing her former captor, she plans to submit written or videotaped testimony.

The victim was approached by the brute while waiting alone for a bus in Yalta, in the Russian annexed region of Crimea and then tricked into following him to a remote spot
A YOUNG woman was captured by a predatory rapist and held prisoner in a derelict building for weeks.
The 24-year-old victim was “befriended” by her kidnapper at a bus stop in Crimea on August 5.
Her sister reported her missing the following day, leading to a massive search across the coastal region.
Police have now freed her and disclosed she was held in an abandoned building near the Yalta-Sevastopol highway.
The 36 year old alleged kidnapper has not been named.
He faces up to ten years in jail on charges of rape, abduction and robbery.
"He raped her multiple times, and stole her jewellery and mobile phone,” reported life.ru
A source close to the investigation said: “The suspect was at a bus stop in Yalta where he lured the victim to a fenced site.
“Keeping her there against her will, and threatening to kill her, he regularly raped her.”
He kept her in the disused building returning with food and committing further sexual violence, say detectives.
The rapist stole belongings from her worth £465, it is alleged.
A missing persons notice posted on social media said Olga had gone missing after leaving her house wearing an orange T-shirt, light coloured skirt, black sandals and she carrying a silver bag.
Her sister led a public campaign to find the missing woman.
Police have not commented on the woman’s health since her release.
