A 16-year-old girl found naked and pepper-sprayed on the sidewalk was kidnapped, robbed and possibly sexually assaulted, police have said.
The unnamed teen was found naked on a street in Berkeley, California just after 5am on Wednesday when neighbors heard her screaming, 'Help me!', police told the San Francisco Chronicle .
Police officials said they were investigating reports that the girl was kidnapped in Oakland, robbed and sexually assaulted before being dumped in Berkeley.
Scene: A teenage girl was found naked on this street in Berkeley on Wednesday morning by neighbors who heard her screaming 'Help me!'. She had apparently been robbed and possibly sexually assaulted
The girl was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland and is in stable condition.
Thomas Stern told KCBS that he was awoken by the girl's screams.
'She yelled that someone had sprayed her in the eyes with something,' he said. 'Then shortly after that, I think she yelled that someone had raped her.
'Then she collapsed to the ground, she was totally in shock, yelling and crying.'

Her continued: ' Seeing a naked person that hysterical that early in the morning, you would think it’s just some crazy person. But who knows what really could have happened. It makes me worry.'
Berkeley police said they responded to reports of the girl calling for help at 5.06am and police officers arrived shortly after and found her.
The Oakland Police Department was called in at 6.21 a.m. and is investigating the incident as 'unusual and suspicious'.
KTVU reported that authorities would not be releasing any further information in fear of jeopardizing the investigation.
There is not yet any suspect information, including what car he could have used.

The girls were reportedly taken to a nearby forest
Why are schoolchildren being abducted?
Police in Nigeria have launched a search and rescue operation for 317 girls kidnapped from a school in the state of Zamfara.
The operation comes as 42 people kidnapped from a boarding school in a similar incident last week in Niger state were released.
The kidnappings are carried out for ransom and are common in the north.
President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the latest kidnapping as "inhumane and totally unacceptable".
The United Nations Children Fund also condemned the abduction of the girls and called for their safe release.
The 2014 kidnap of 276 schoolgirls in the north-eastern town of Chibok by Islamist militants Boko Haram brought global attention to the scourge of raids on schools in Nigeria but the most recent attacks are suspected to be the work of criminal gangs.
Nigerian police said in a statement that "a co-ordinated search and rescue operation, involving the deployment of both ground and aerial assets" was under way.
Two helicopters have been deployed.
Police also appealed for calm. Residents of the town of Jangebe, where the abduction took place, have reacted angrily, attacking vehicles that entered.
The Vanguard newspaper said that a convoy of journalists was attacked by a mob.
Friday's attack happened at 01:00 local time (midnight GMT) when a group of gunmen arrived at the Government Girls Secondary School in Jangebe .
Some reports say the girls, aged 12 to 16, have been taken to the Dangulbi forest.
Zamfara state has closed all boarding schools.
No group has so far admitted carrying out the attack.
A total of 42 people including 27 students, kidnapped from a boarding school in Kagara in the north-central state of Niger 10 days ago, have been freed.
An armed gang had stormed the school when the pupils were asleep. One boy was killed.
The group was also taken to a nearby forest.
Niger state Governor Abubakar Sani Bello said in a tweet on Saturday: "The abducted students, staff and relatives of Government Science Collage Kagara have regained their freedom and have been received by the Niger state government."
The released group is reported to have arrived in Minna, the state capital. No further details have been released as yet.
Every time children are taken from their schools by armed gunmen in northern Nigeria, the kidnapping of the Chibok girls is mentioned.
Similar raids took place before that well-publicised abduction but they received little publicity and they never involved girls.
But global attention generated by the #BringBackOurGirls campaign showed armed groups that the mass abduction of children was a sure way of applying pressure on authorities, including asking for ransom, although the authorities always deny paying.
The government does not appear to have a strategy for stopping these incidents from happening.
But two weeks ago, lawmakers from Zamfara state suggested offering amnesty to repentant kidnappers in exchange for sustainable economic opportunities.
It's a controversial strategy but one that yielded some positive results in the Niger Delta, which saw a reduction in crime after a similar amnesty programme in 2009.
The government so far says it will not negotiate with criminals.
In the meantime, schools in rural northern Nigeria are more vulnerable than they've ever been.

The blonde woman is pictured lying helplessly on her back in a pink one-piece outfit with a distant look in her eyes and one of her breasts exposed
Shocking photos have emerged showing a young woman believed to be glamour model Chloe Ayling looking dazed on the floor after she was allegedly drugged and kidnapped.
The blonde woman is pictured lying helplessly on her back in a pink one-piece outfit with a distant look in her eyes and one of her breasts exposed.
It was claimed that the photos were taken as Miss Ayling, 20, was allegedly held captive in an old farmhouse in Italy and auctioned for sex with bids starting at $300,000 (£230,000).
A card said to belong to the shadowy Black Death group was placed on the woman's stomach in the photos.
The images were emailed to British newspapers with the author claiming the woman named 'Chloe' was being sold on the dark web by "Russian mafia".
Miss Ayling, from Coulsdon, south London, has told police she was lured to Milan for what turned out to be a fake photo shoot on July 11, and then held hostage for six days near Turin.
She was allegedly drugged and told she would be auctioned as a sex slave on the dark web.
An email advertising the auction listed the mum-of-one's name as 'Chloe', plus her age and measurements, and called her a "beginner model".
Written in broken English, an email sent to the Sun stated: "Did you know chloe ayling has been kidnapped in italy and is now for sale by russian mafia ??? see attachament.
The ad claimed that "specific targets" could be abducted "for your needs" for an expensive fee.
It also claimed that abducted women or girls can be transported around the world after being seen by a doctor who tests for sexually transmitted diseases "and whether they are pure".
The author also wrote that the women could be collected or delivered within the EU free of charge.
The advert claimed the group does not sell women who are pregnant or young mothers.
The National Crime Agency said it is aware of the email and is investigating.
Miss Ayling was allegedly drugged with horse tranquilliser ketamine, stripped and handcuffed before being bundled into a suitcase in the boot of a car by two masked men.
It was claimed she was then driven to an Alpine village, Borgial, where she was shackled to a chest of drawers and forced to sleep on the ground with her mouth taped shut.
She told officers one of her captors removed the tape and cuffs, allowed her to walk freely around the house, moved her to his bed and gave her chocolate and new underwear.
Lukasz Pawel Herba, a Polish man who now lives in Oldbury, West Midlands, was arrested, but claimed he did not knowingly take part in any crime.
He said his involvement stems from wanting to raise money to treat his leukaemia and that he was hired by a group of Romanians to rent properties around Europe to store garments they were selling.
Herba is said to have told investigators he posed as a photographer and met Miss Ayling, and was paid £500,000 but backed out after learning of the kidnap plot.
It later emerged that Miss Ayling had gone shopping for shoes and groceries with her captor, and that she had promised him sex in exchange for her freedom.
She told police that she fended off sexual advances and made false promises in a bid to gain the man's trust.
Miss Ayling was eventually taken to the British consulate in Milan. Herba was arrested and remains in custody.
It was claimed that the plot to sell her unravelled when the gang found out she was a mum of a two-year-old boy.
Miss Ayling's lawyer, Francesco Pesce, dismissed doubts about the ordeal, saying it was "evil" to suggest that she was involved or that it wasn't real or terrifying.
She was informed she was going to be sold to somebody in the Middle East for sex and complied with her captor during the alleged kidnap because she was told she would be killed if she tried to flee, Mr Pesce added.
It was alleged the men ordered her now former agent Phil Green, of Supermodel Agency, pay a ransom to secure her release. No ransom was paid.
Speaking previously, Ms Ayling, who has since returned home to the UK, said she had feared for her life "second by second" and thanked the Italian and UK authorities.

MILLIONS of tourists flock to this resort town for its famous beaches, but lately something strange has been happening.
HMM, they didn’t mention this in the guidebook.
It’s famous for its “dazzling beaches, quirky shops and lush palm-covered mountains” with Lonely Planet declaring it one of Mexico’s most enticing coastal destinations. Attracting millions of tourists each year, it’s definitely a tourist drawcard.
But now, the resort town of Puerto Vallarta is making headlines for a strange new reason: A naked mystery that’s shocking locals and baffling officials.
A group of people have been abducted, stripped and tied naked to lampposts, with their buttocks red raw.
Local police have confirmed that the incidents and have opened an investigation, but declined to say how many people were involved. However, local media have reported at least 10 cases.
The victims also had the letter “R” marked on their heads — potentially referring to the Spanish word for “rat”, or thief.
There’s speculation it could be a bizarre twist in the gang wars. But with the victims refusing to talk to police, or claiming they didn’t remember anything, it’s hard to know for sure.
Only one victim has given away any information, stating he was taken from his home by people unknown to him, before being beaten on a farm.
Mexico has come under the spotlight this year for skyrocketing murder rates .
Travel advisories from Australia and the US state that visitors should exercise a “high degree of caution” when in Mexico — the second-lowest of four travel advice levels.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) warns of high levels of violent crime and drug-related violence.
“Murder, armed robbery, sexual assault and kidnapping are risks, including in popular tourist destinations and beach resorts. Risks increase after dark,” the department says.
This is DFAT’s main advice for Australians considering visiting Mexico:
• Pay close attention to your personal security at all times
• Avoid travelling at night outside of major cities, including on major highways
• Avoid changing money at the airport if possible, or change only small amounts to avoid attracting attention
• Use only official taxis from airports. Pre-pay your fare at one of the official taxi company booths located in the arrivals hall at airport terminals
• Use only radio-dispatched taxis or taxis based at designated stands (sitios), especially in Mexico City
• Using toll (cuota) roads may reduce the risk of crime when driving
• Don’t leave your drinks or food unattended, especially in bars or nightclubs
• Don’t accept food, drinks, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances
• Monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks. Avoid trouble spots.
