Jayde Kendall: Teenage friend accused of murder 'depressed and agitated'
The teenager accused of killing Queensland schoolgirl Jayde Kendall is extremely depressed and agitated, his lawyer says.
Brenden Bennetts, 18, was remanded in custody after a brief appearance in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
As he entered the dock in prison browns, Bennetts smiled at his mother and father who were both in court and sat quietly during his appearance.
Defence lawyer Brendan Ryan said Bennetts would plead not guilty to murder and apply for bail in the Supreme Court in due time.
"I wish I was here in happier circumstances," Mr Ryan said outside court.
"I know there will be a lot [of] speculation about what has occurred but the position is that there are circumstances behind what has occurred and a lot of circumstances are yet to be revealed.
"The police investigation is still limited. The police are still constructing their case.
"There is certainly a defence case to be made in this matter."
Jayde's body was found on Thursday morning, confirming her family's worst fears and that of her community, which has set up a memorial fund.
A member of the public found her body in farmland in Upper Tenthill, about 16 kilometres from Jayde's home town of Gatton.
Bennetts was the last person with whom Jayde was seen alive.
She had gotten into a red hatchback car with him after school two weeks ago.
"It was a limited acquaintanceship, but yes they were friends," he said outside court.
"He's extremely depressed, down, agitated. At the same time, he is extremely quiet and reserved.
"He has significant remorse for the family and friends of the family and his own family for the absolute tragic events that have taken over their lives."
Bennetts is due to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court next Friday.
He is also facing one charge of interfering with a corpse.
After Jayde disappeared, items belonging to her were found on the side of a road about 45 kilometres from where she was last seen.
Acting Detective Inspector Matt Howard said the breakthrough in locating Jayde's body came after police asked members of the community to search their land and property for anything that was out of place.
"As a result, a member of the community contacted Crime Stoppers and led us to this area where we conducted a search and located the body."
"At this stage there is no evidence to suggest that the male person wasn't acting alone."
Insp Howard said Jayde's family was devastated.
"I've spoken with Jayde's father and her extended family, and as you can imagine they are very upset to hear this news," he said.
"It's been a very complex investigation and I'd like to thank everyone's patience.
"It has been very hard on investigators and obviously the family but it has led us to this result.
"Obviously there [are] no winners in this investigation but we have ended up with a result."
The Gatton community is rallying behind Jayde's family.
A Facebook page set up to help find her, which has 12,000 followers, is encouraging people to wear purple today, Jayde's favourite colour.
"Jayde impacted on the lives of all those who knew her because of her generous nature and kind soul," the organisers of the page wrote.
A memorial fund has been set up for Jayde's family, raising $4,000 through 100 donations by Friday morning.
Jayde's family made a public appeal to help find her on Monday, during which she was described by her uncle Craig Morrissey as "the glue who holds this family together".
"Jayde's mother passed away a fair few years ago and she really became a mother to her little brother and therefore her father," he said.
"Our family is a very private, loving, close-knit circle of people and we are deeply traumatised."
A special school assembly was held at Jayde's Lockyer District High School and counselling offered.
Local sporting clubs will also wear black arm bands and purple.
Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones said many groups around Gatton were looking at ways to help.
"Lockyer High School is one of those schools where there's a lot of camaraderie and social interaction and I think it's such a close-knit community it's really so important that we all do what we can to help them."
"It certainly has an effect, a huge effect not just on Jayde's family and her friends but on everyone in the community.
"I don't think there is not too many people in this community that really haven't felt the effect of this and the sadness of it."
