Houston Cougars’ Kelvin Sampson Named AP Coach of the Year After Historic Season

Houston, TX — March 29, 2025

In a resounding affirmation of his leadership, University of Houston men’s basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson has been named the Associated Press Coach of the Year for the 2024-25 season. This marks the second time Sampson has earned the prestigious honor, further cementing his legacy as one of college basketball’s elite coaches.

Under Sampson’s guidance, the Cougars finished the regular season with a 30-2 record, securing the No. 1 ranking in the AP Poll for a program-record eight consecutive weeks. Houston also claimed the Big 12 regular-season championship in just their second year in the powerhouse conference, a testament to Sampson’s ability to build a contender in any league.

'Coach Sampson’s relentless work ethic and defensive philosophy have transformed Houston into a national powerhouse,' said AP voter Joe Lunardi. 'What he’s done in the Big 12, against blueblood programs, is nothing short of remarkable.'

Sampson, known for his tough-nosed defensive schemes and player development, has led the Cougars to six straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four run in 2021 and an Elite Eight appearance in 2023. This season, Houston boasts the nation’s top-ranked defense, allowing just 57.8 points per game.

'Individual awards are a reflection of team success,' Sampson said in a statement. 'This is about our players buying in, our staff grinding every day, and our fans creating the best home-court advantage in the country.'

With the NCAA Tournament set to begin next week, Houston is projected as a No. 1 seed, and Sampson’s leadership has them positioned as a favorite to cut down the nets in San Antonio.

What’s Next?
Sampson’s name has also surfaced in NBA coaching rumors, with the Detroit Pistons reportedly interested in interviewing him. However, sources close to the coach suggest he remains focused on bringing Houston its first national championship since 1984.

For now, Cougar fans can celebrate yet another milestone for the man who has restored Houston basketball to national prominence.
