Kelvin Gastelum Eyes Return to Welterweight After Middleweight Stint

Las Vegas, NV – March 29, 2025 – UFC veteran Kelvin Gastelum has announced his intentions to drop back down to the welterweight division, reigniting hopes of a fresh start in the weight class where he once challenged for an interim title.

Gastelum (17-9, 1 NC), a former The Ultimate Fighter winner, has spent the majority of his recent career competing at middleweight, where he faced top contenders like Israel Adesanya, Robert Whittaker, and Jared Cannonier. However, after a series of tough losses and weight-cutting struggles, the 33-year-old fighter believes a return to 170 pounds could revitalize his career.

'I feel like I've done what I can at 185,' Gastelum said in an exclusive interview with MMA Junkie. 'I’ve fought the best, but my body naturally fits welterweight better. I’m disciplined now, and I know I can make the cut safely.'

Gastelum’s most memorable welterweight moment came in 2017 when he defeated former champion Johny Hendricks, but weight management issues forced his move up to middleweight. Since then, he has been a perennial contender but has struggled to secure another title shot.

UFC President Dana White expressed support for Gastelum’s decision, stating, 'Kelvin’s a warrior. If he can make 170 safely, there are some big fights for him there.' Potential matchups include rising contenders like Ian Garry or a rematch with Sean Brady, who defeated him in 2023.

Nutritionists and coaches close to Gastelum confirm he has been working with a new team to ensure a healthy weight cut. If successful, his return could shake up an already stacked welterweight division.

Fans won’t have to wait long—Gastelum is expected to make his welterweight return at UFC Fight Night in July, with an opponent to be announced soon.
