Kelly Clarkson is sharing new details about her summer off with her family.

On Tuesday's episode of Today , the singer, 40, chatted with co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Carson Daly about how she spent her first summer off in over 20 years, sharing that she was in the Montana mountains with her two kids, whom she shares with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock .

"It's obviously been a rough couple of years so it was really important to me to shut down for a minute," said Clarkson, who split from Blackstock, 45, in June 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage. (Their divorce was finalized in March .)

"I literally four-wheeled in the mountains," she said of her summer plans. "I have a lot of water on my property so my sister, my nephew and I and a couple friends just spent the whole summer in the mountains."

Asked by Daly if her kids River Rose, 8, and Remington Alexander, 6, were there, Clarkson said, "The kids were with me and with their dad."

"It was nice because they usually have to travel a lot because of our separation so we were both in Montana," she added. "I felt like the first time my kids felt a little more centered as well."

The American Idol alum also spoke about her kids heading back to the classroom, sharing that this is the first year that her children will be attending the same school.

As for whether they're looking forward to the school year, Clarkson said her son is "very excited about the big playground."

In June, the "Stronger" singer opened up on The Chart Show with Brooke Reese on Apple Music 1 about writing new music while dealing with the ripple effects of her split from Blackstock and the struggles that came with it.

The Kelly Clarkson Show host said that dealing with the divorce "in the public eye" while balancing motherhood "makes it just a whole different dynamic," but that she's always used songwriting as an outlet for her emotions.

A source told PEOPLE in March that upon finalizing her divorce, Clarkson was ready to move forward.

"Kelly is obviously happy to have the divorce finalized," the insider said. "The kids have always been her main priority through everything. She truly is able to begin the next chapter of her life with her kids, and she's also busier than ever with her career. She's in a great place."

Kelly Clarkson left Los Angeles for the summer to spend time with her two children in Montana, where her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, also resides.
“The kids were with me and with their dad,” the “American Idol” alum said of daughter River, 8, and son Remington, 6, during a Tuesday “Today” show appearance .
“It was nice because they usually have to travel a lot because of our separation, [but] we were both in Montana,” the 40-year-old singer told Hoda Kotb and Carson Daly.
“It was the first time I think my kids felt more centered as well.”
The “Voice” judge, who split from her former manager, 45, in June 2020, noted that she hasn’t taken a summer off since she was 16 — but needed to wind down after a “rough couple of years.”

Clarkson explained, “It was really important to me to, like, shut down for a minute. I literally four-wheeled in the mountains.
“My sister, my nephew and I, and a couple friends just spent the whole summer in the mountains, just hanging out in nature,” she continued, noting that she has “a lot of water on [her] property.”
Clarkson bought the 14 acres in 2019 while married to Blackstock, and they battled over the ranch after calling it quits.
The songwriter was initially awarded the property during divorce proceedings in October 2021, but her ex argued that the abode was “marital property” and not included in their prenup.
When Clarkson attempted to get him evicted from the ranch two months later, a judge refused.
In January, the “Since U Been Gone” singer agreed to give her ex-husband 5.12 percent of the property .
Their divorce was finalized two months later.
The “Kelly Clarkson Show” host did not specify on Tuesday whether she herself spent time with Blackstock while they co-parented their kids in the same state.
The former couple share custody of River and Remington, whom they welcomed in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

Kelly Ripa is officially waving goodbye to the summer as she sends her kids off to school once again.
The actress and television personality took to Instagram to go "back to reality" in a sweet sendoff to her three children.
The new photo depicts Ripa's three children, Joaquin , 19, Lola , 21, and Michael , 25, whom she shares with husband, Mark Consuelos .
Ripa captioned the photo, "It sure was nice having the chickens back in the nest for a couple of weeks. Back to life …..back to reality ♥️♥️♥️🥺 #summer #vibes ."
It looks like Ripa and Consuelos got some extra bonding time with their children this summer, but as the season ends, life starts to pick up again.
The Live With Kelly and Ryan co-host had a pretty busy summer, however, as she's currently hosting the new ABC show Generation Gap , described by ABC as a game show in which "Family members work together to answer questions about each other’s generations ."
Ripa is also preparing for the release of her new book Live Wire: Long-Winded Short Stories on Sept. 27, followed by the book tour.
This will be the 51-year-old's first book, featuring stories from her real life about everything from parenthood to her upbringing in New Jersey.
Meanwhile, Ripa's kids have also been busy. Both Michael and Lola had birthdays at the beginning of the season in June, which Ripa posted about on social media.
On top of that, Lola released her first single, “Paranoia Silverlining,” not long ago.
She thanked listeners with an Instagram post showing herself in the music studio, stating, "Thank you for showing paranoia silver lining all the love and support."
Michael started started acting a while back, picking up the craft from his parents. He even played a teen Hiram Lodge in Riverdale , the younger version of his father's character in the show.
As for the youngest, Joaquin, it looks like he currently goes to the University of Michigan and is a talented wrestler, at least according to his Instagram page .
