While she was in Australia, Preston was spotted at 16 by a fashion photographer who assisted her in getting work in commercials and small roles and organized her first movie audition in 1980 for the role of Emmeline in The Blue Lagoon (1980) which she lost to the younger actress Brooke Shields. That’s the time when she changed her last name to Preston.
Her first major movie roles came in 1985 when she first played Marilyn McCauley in a romantic comedy teen movie Mischief, and later as the beautiful, but, mean Deborah Ann Fimple in another teen romantic comedy titled Secret Admirer.
Her other noteworthy movie performances came in Spacecamp (1986), Twins (1988) where she acted alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, Jerry Maguire (1996) with Tom Cruise, as Jane Aubrey in For Love of the Game with Kevin Costner and in Holy Man (1998) with Eddie Murphy and Jeff Goldblum.
She also starred in Nothing to Lose, co-starring Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence, although there was no screen credit was shared by Lawrence or Preston.
In the movie Battlefield Earth (2000) she played the role of her husband John Travolta’s girlfriend Teri, a performance that landed her the “Worst Supporting Actress” title at the 21st Golden Raspberry Awards. She was later seen as the flying, superheroine mother of the hero in the movie Sky High (2005).
Preston appeared in the Maroon 5 music video “She Will Be Loved” in 2004. The video depicts a love triangle and romantic visuals between Preston and Maroon 5 leading man Adam Levine. In 2007, Preston was seen in a crime thriller, Death Sentence wherein she plays Helen Hume, the wife of the character played by Kevin Bacon.
In 2008, she appeared in a television pilot for a potential show titled Suburban Shootout. She also had a short term repeat role in Medium. In 2008, she played a starring role in the Lifetime movie The Tenth Circle, directed by Peter Markle.
The movie was filmed in Nova Scotia and the cast included Ron Eldard, Brittany Robertson, Michael Riley, Jamie Johnston, and Geordie Brown. She has been the spokeswoman for Neutrogena since 2005 and has made an appearance in print and television advertisements.
