Blonde Redhead's Kazu Makino is a triple—no, make that quadruple—threat. On stage (or in the studio, on one of the band's nine albums ), the Japanese musician might be singing from behind a curtain of black hair, layering the band's sound with keyboards, underscoring it with bass, or outright shredding on guitar. To go along with her "hardcore tour life," Makino has curated an array of clothing that is as delicately pretty as it is totally freeing.
Ahead of Blonde Redhead's headlining performance at NYC's New Night show on September 29, Makino shared 11 of her favorite stage looks and told us why her customized Isabel Marant dresses, Margiela Tabi boots, and Jane Mayle–heavy selections are the perfect fit.

This Isabel Marant dress was knee-length. It looked like a Marilyn Monroe–style dress and it was great that way, but I cut it short to make it work for me. It just feels so good, and has a special vibe.

I had been working all winter in the studio indoors, hunched over, and I did not feel comfortable with my body. So I had my dungarees by Kapital on, and wore them with an Isabel Marant lace top. It made me dance better. I don't know how that works!

This is around the time I started to be close to Jane Mayle. Eventually I cut the dress off into a mini and kept playing in it.

This is a classic Mayle dress—I think it's actually called the Makino dress . I have this style in so many different fabrics, and they are basically made for performing. The style is backless and I can clip my in-ear monitor onto it, which acts as an anchor so the dress stays put. I'm with my new friend Shayna, amazing drummer lady!

These are Isabel Marant trousers. She gave me her own pairs because she thought I needed them for my hardcore tour life. So I have two or three pairs. You can practically track me down when I am wearing these...I leave a trail of shiny scales behind. If you stop worrying about whether they make your legs look bigger or whatever, it just opens up a whole new world.

This is an Isabel Marant top and skirt, with a Victorian-style cut. The lace is so beautiful. I think I am also wearing a belt by her that gives a lot of edge to the outfit, but also I can clip my in-ear monitor to it.

This is an Isabel Marant military jacket with Mayle boots. I have only two pairs for the stage: this pair and some Margiela Tabi boots.

This is a Jane Mayle strapless dress. I still had lots of pins holding it together while I played in it because this is the sample. I loved the print, which made me think of a cow's skin, but Jane was thinking more "cherry blossom storm." The slightly awkward fit is so cool—it is not overly sexy. And this is the other pair of boots that I only wear when performing, the famous Tabi boot by Maison Margiela . They are so comfortable that I can wear them and run around.

This is such a beautiful lace number from Isabel Marant. But it is too long for playing, and you cannot cut lace so easily, so I tuck it into my knickers.
A romper by Jane Mayle! In silk. Such an unusual fit. Things don't have to be skintight to flatter your body.
This is probably one of my all-time favorites. It has a shape like the Makino dress with a cut-out shoulder, made with fake suede in creamy white. This weightless dress just felt so good on my skin. It fell apart, but I always think about this dress and I hope Jane makes me another one.
