Allerdings mussten die Kaufleute, die Räubereien verschmähten, immer auf der Hut sein. Auf einer Handelsreise setzten sie sich vielen Gefahren und Nöten aus. Eine Seereise war besonders riskant: Es gab „Seekrankheit“, einen Aufruhr ewig unzufriedener Seeleute und Seestürme, die jährlich Dutzende von Handelsschiffen auf den Grund schickten. Der Kaufmann, der sich auf dem Landweg bewegte, hatte nicht weniger Schwierigkeiten. Die Straßen waren oft in einem erbärmlichen Zustand. Auf Lehm- oder Sumpfboden gelegt, verwandelten sie sich nach jedem Regen in einen schmutzigen Sumpf mit unzähligen Furchen und Gruben; Pferde sanken bis zur Brust in sie ein, Wagen sanken bis zu ihren Naben ein. Aber selbst die Zahlung all dieser Gelder schützte die Handelskarawanen nicht vor Überfällen und Raubüberfällen. Räuberfeudalherren, die vor dem königlichen Gericht sprachen, gaben zu, dass sie Kaufleute angegriffen hatten, nachdem sie bereits die übliche Steuer von ihnen erhoben hatten. Außerdem wimmelte es auf dem Land von entlaufenen Soldaten und Vagabunden. Jeder Reisende konnte von ihnen angegriffen werden, besonders wenn er viel Geld oder Waren bei sich hatte. Und den Kaufmann, der am Ziel seiner Reise ankam, erwartete kein herzlicher Empfang. In vielen Städten handelten lokale Handwerker selbst mit ihren Produkten, und die Waren von besuchenden Kaufleuten wurden nur in großen Mengen, in begrenzten Mengen und zu einem genau festgelegten Zeitpunkt aufgekauft. Auswärtige und ausländische Kaufleute, die sich in einer fremden Stadt nicht ganz wohl fühlten, hielten meist an speziellen städtischen Handelshöfen, wo ihre Waren auch gelagert wurden.
