Katya M. Rodriguez R. (she/her) is a Mexican immigrant (proud Cachanilla), former English-learner, and first-generation student. Her unique experience growing up in Calexico, a US-Mexico border town, introduced her to educational inequities before she understood the meaning of the word. Attending an under-resourced and underperforming district initially led her to believe that the problem was a result of individuals who placed her at a disadvantage. Her K-12 experience prompted Katya to obtain her B.S. in Anthropology from University of La Verne in order to better understand humanity. In 2017, Katya moved to Rhode Island, introducing her to a vibrant community that taught her the importance of being informed and listening to individuals and communities directly impacted by social issues. Eventually, Katya came to understand that the status quo remained stagnant due to people AND systems. This shifted her focus to policy & legislation, leading her to pursue a M.A. in Urban Education Policy at Brown University. While her personal journey motivated her to follow this path, she believes that it shouldn’t take an oppressed life to see the importance of social justice and take action. Katya currently serves at the Equity Institute, an education-based non-profit, where she leads all research and evaluation work. She also directs a program that focuses on unearthing organizations’ root causes of their equity gaps to provide actionable recommendations and strategic actions for intentional change. Katya believes that all students deserve a high-quality education regardless of their zip code and she strives to develop a just & equitable education system.
