In 2015, Ink Master season 6 introduced us to tattooer Katie McGowan. McGowan competed on the show with her mentor, Matt O'Baugh, finishing in 8th place. She later returned with O'Baugh to compete again on season 10, Shop Wars, with the pair completing in second at the live finale. And while fans were impressed by McGowan's tattooing ability at the season 10 finale, all eyes were on her incredible physical transformation. Between wrapping filming and tattooing live in New York city, McGowan had lost an impressive amount of weight. And when she appeared on Ink Master: Angels in her home state of Arkansas, audiences saw even more progress. We caught up with the tattooer to learn why she decided to make a change and how being on television impacted her self-perception.
I had never really considered competing on Ink Master before, but Matt O'Baugh's wife (and my good friend) Jessica was really encouraging of us auditioning and felt like we should at least give it a shot. So, kind of on a whim, Matt, my coworker Paul Lee, and I decided on a Saturday night to drive eight hours to Austin, Tx for an open casting call that took place that Sunday afternoon. Luckily the auditions happened to go really well and the producers asked if Matt and I could stay an extra day to do some more auditioning, this time in front of a camera. A couple months later, after several phone calls and emails with producers, we were given the green light for Ink Master Season 6 "Master vs. Apprentice." I was beyond excited.
When producers reached out to me about coming back for season 9, I was feeling more motivated than ever to compete because a couple more years or experience under my belt and a more educated outlook on what it was like to compete in high pressure situations. This time around, the theme of the season was "Shop Wars." Matt O'Baugh would be competing too, but now as my partner, representing our shop. Making it to the season 9 finale, and just being on stage in front of everyone was such a surreal experience. Winning America's vote for "best live tattoo" for the mandala I did at the finale still feels like a dream. I'm so, so thankful for the opportunities I've had to compete on the show and to participate on the spin-offs, Ink Master: Angels and Ink Master: Redemption.
