Happy birthday, Kathryn Janeway! Well, happy future birthday. May 20th will be the future birth date of Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Federation Starship Voyager. The captain from Star Trek: Voyager. This is the reason why Fandom Friday is on a Wednesday this week. I couldn't pass up the chance to post a makeup tutorial for Captain Janeway on her birthday. I couldn't do it. I couldn't justify posting a regular post on May 20th when my head was screaming, "Janeway. Janeway. Janeway. Do a Janeway post! It's her birthday!". My head won. It threw up lizard when the other side had Spock.

A couple of week's ago I found a website that posts the exact makeup products that MUAs use when creating the looks for certain celebrities. The site actually had one for Janeway - here - which I couldn't believe. Naturally a number of the products immediately joined my growing makeup wishlist. With only two of the products from that list in my possession, I created this inspired look.

Getting a good look at Janeway's eye makeup wasn't easy because she rarely had her eyes closed and if she did, she was covered in dirt and grim. After a while, I managed to get a couple of screengrabs that would do. That being said, her look does change throughout the series as the character evolved. The general rule that I went with for this look was to use matte products only.

Foundation : Revlon Colorstay - Ivory

Concealers : Rimmel Lasting Finish Concealer - Porcelain

          Collection Lasting Perfection - Fair

Powder : L'Oreal True Match Pressed Powder - R1-C1 Rose Ivory

Brows : L'Oreal Brow Artist Genius Kit - Light to Medium

Eyeshadow : Sleek iDivine Matte (v.2) eyeshadow palette

           L'Oreal Mono Eyeshadow - 106 Breaking Nude

           MAC - Espresso

Mascara : Maybelline LashSensational

Bronzer : The Body Shop Honey Bronzer - 02 Fair Matte

L'Oreal Glam Bronze Duo - 101 Blonde Harmony

Before starting on my eye makeup, I took care of my base because it wasn't going to match Kate Mulgrew's - I'm paler. You do your normal foundation routine. I used Revlon's Colorstay foundation first before using a duo of concealers, Rimmel Lasting Finish and Collection Lasting Perfection . I set everything using my L'Oreal True Match powder . I also primed my eyelids using the Rimmel concealer to cancel out any blueness and veins before setting it with the L'Oreal powder.

With my Real Techniques Accent brush , I took the powder from my L'Oreal Brow Artist kit and filled in my eyebrows. I don't have an elaborate brow routine - I doubt Janeway would have one either. She does command a starship afterall, Brows may not be important to a starship captain, I don't know. I basically used the brush to give my brows some shape and less bald spots.

For my eyes, I started with my transition shade - a peach toned shade that I took into my crease using a fluffy tapered brush. I took ' Flesh ' from my Sleek iDivines Matte (v.2) eyeshadow palette on my Sephora 73 Crease Shadow brush . I started the product at the outer corner and then swept it over my crease.

To darken up the crease a little bit, I took my Honey Bronzer from The Body Shop . This is a matte powder bronzer which can be easily used as an eyeshadow too. On the same brush as before, I took a little product and put into to my outer corner before taking the excess up and across my crease. I took the last of the excess over my eyelid lightly.

Once I had that blended out, I lifted a matte eyeshadow from L'Oreal - I took my L'Oreal Mono eyeshadow in 106 Breaking Nude . It's a gorgeous matte, light-brown shadow that's perfect for darkening up the crease area. I took this on a fluffy blending brush - I used my MAC 217 - concentrating it first at the outer corner before sweeping it over my crease and lid.

The MUA that created this look for Janeway used predominantly MAC eyeshadows. I bought Espresso last week in the hopes that I can embody Janeway by using this. Shallow, I know, but we all do it in one shape or form . On the same MAC 217, I took Espresso through my crease and outer corner. I gave it a quick swipe over my lid too. Make sure that there are no harsh lines and that everything is blended out nicely.

On an angled liner brush, I used a duo eye brush from Revlon , I used Espresso to line my upper lashline. I then used a brush that I got from a W7 palette to buff that line out.

I lined my tightline with Rimmel's Soft Kohl black liner pencil . I then lined my lower lashline with it about half way across. I didn't put it into my waterline.

After curling my lashes, I coated both top and bottom lashes generously with my Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara . You can use whatever mascara that you want.

To bring some colour to my cheeks, I used a peach blusher. I used Le Blush ( Peach ) from L'Oreal on my DeliPlus Polvos (powder) brush . I love this brush. I gushed and raved about in my last post. I dusted this over my cheeks lightly, building it up as I wished.

The MUA listed contouring and highlightiing products for the look she did. Naturally, I followed suit and ( attempted ) contoured. I took my Body Shop Honey Bronzer and my Real Techniques Sculpting Brush . I applied the bronzer just below my cheekbones, blending it out and upwards to carve it out. I also took it to my temples, hairline and jaw to add more definition.

To define my cheekbones a smidge more, I used the bronzer shade from my L'Oreal Glam Duo on my Real Techniques Contour Brush. I took it under my cheekbones only. This added a little bit of emphasis to my cheekbones.

To finish the look off, I used MAC's Twig lipstick . This is the actual shade that the MUA used. I have been loving this lipstick since buying it last week. It's a very me shade. It perfectly helps me get in touch with my inner Janeway.

My camera cut out as I was doing the finished look stills. It cut out when I had finished but didn't actually record it. I tried to re-do it a couple of hours later. Let's just say, it didn't turn out so well. Fortunately, I did take some photographs on my phone after I had initially filmed. #narcissist

That is your finished look. I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial and found it easy to learn from. If you have any comments or questions, don't hesitate to comment and get it touch. I'll be happy to help you in whatever way I can.

How are you planning on celebrating Janeway's birthday? A nice hot cup of black coffee, perhaps? Whatever you are doing, I hope that you have a wonderful day. If you recreate this look, I would love to see it. You can tag me on social media, I'm 29Sapphires on Twitter and Instagram.

You re-created her look so well, it really suits you too! The Velvet Black // UK Style & Beauty Blog
Thank you so much, Alice! I really appreciate that. :) ~ Kazzie
fab tutorial, love your lip colour x Hannah | Heyitshannaah
Thank you, Hannah! I'm absolutely obsessed with this lipstick. ~ Kazzie
I just tried to find out what color Laneways lipstick was and found your site. Will definitely try this tutorial as soon as I have acquired the necessary make-up (some of it is pretty hard to come by in Germany though - apparently L'Oreal true match powder isn't sold here (anymore) o.Ô) I've always had an eye on MAC but haven't actually bought anything from them. I guess Janeway's lipstick is a perfect place to start :D
I found her lipstick on a website that is linked in the post. It has her whole face listed. The L'Oreal True Match powder is the one that I had to hand and not the one that was used on Kate Mulgrew. You can use any setting powder that you want. You don't have to use the exact products that I used - colour match them and you'll be fine. I only got Espresso and Twig from MAC because I thought I could embody Janeway that way through the two products (and I wanted to treat myself to something from MAC). Thank you so much for stopping by. If you have any questions or even a request, feel free to leave me a comment. Have a great day.
Unfortunately by the time you did all that, Voyager would have been assimilated by the Borg! Captain Janeway must have some kind of 24th Century technology, perhaps an Emergency Makeup Hologram that projects over her face?
Hi! I love this tutorial!! You did such a lovely job! I can't seem to find the article where you found the full list of makeup used on her for the show - your link just goes to the main site. Do you still happen to have that list? I want to get as accurate as possible! Thank you so much!
I am SO SORRY for taking so long to reply. I wasn't alerted to the comment. Luckily, I managed to find a screenshot I took of the information. FOUNDATION: Chanel Pro Lumiere Professional Finish Makeup - Beige CONCEALER: Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage - SC-2 POWDER: Lancome Powder - Translucent Beige BLUSH: Tuttle Blusher in Mauve with La Femme Glow-On Rouge Peach Nectar EYE SHADOW: MAC Eye shadow - Bliss, Orb, Malt, Saddle and Espresso BROWS: Faber Jet Pencil - Black Ebony MASCARA: Chanel - Black LIPS: MAC Lipstick - Twig HIGHLIGHTS/CONTOUR: Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage in SC-2, Tuttle in Coco Bare and MAC eyshadow in Soft Brown. I hope that helps. Again, I'm so sorry that it took so long to get back to you.
And people wonder why I love the internet! ^^ Thank you for this tutorial, I think you did an excellent job, very, very close to the source material! I have to admit I've never been totally convinced by the look itself. I feel the lipstick was a tad too blueish and made Janeway look older, especially in the later seasons. The eye-makeup ( black mascara) also looks a bit harsh. I find it interesting that the look contains no eyeliner. Was that typical for 90ies (Trek)?
