Katherine Parkinson never intended to write a play. In fact, when the BBC first asked her, while she was on the set of Channel 4 sci-fi drama Humans last year, if she might consider putting pen to paper as part of its first-time playwright initiative, DEBUT, it was a “definite no” from the former The IT Crowd star.
Arguably one of the hardest working actresses in the UK, she is currently appearing on stage eight times a week in Home, I’m Darling at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London and has just finished shooting a film with Rosamund Pike and a comedy series for BBC2. Parkinson simply didn’t have the time.
After Humans, she was on her way to Georgia to film How to Fake a War in which she stars as a PR consultant who has to prolong a war when a ceasefire is called just days before a charity concert. After that, she was back in the UK to rehearse Home, I’m Darling, which opened in Wales in June last year before transferring to the National Theatre in London in July. It was a jam-packed schedule with little time to nibble a quill and sketch out a plot, dialogue and characters.
But the seed was sown. The idea for her play, Sitting, came to her when she was in the bath. “That’s a nice image for everyone, isn’t it?” she says. Parkinson ended up writing the script while out in Georgia in “a kind of impulsive, inspired rush” before submitting it in hope more than expectation. “For the first time in my life, I met a deadline,” she laughs.
The play, told via monologues, follows Luke, Cassandra and Mary who are all having their portraits drawn by an unseen artist. As the weekly sitting sessions go on, the trio end up baring more than their bodies, sharing their own stories of love, longing and loss. It’s funny as well as moving, and contains a bit of nudity.
The premise came from an experience Parkinson herself had at university in Oxford where she sat, fully clothed, for a portrait. She got £12 an hour for the work but doesn’t think the painting exists anymore having been painted over by the artist in question. “Hopefully,” she says. Would she strip off now for a painter? “Nobody’s asked me to take my clothes off for a painting but if anyone does, I’d consider it,” she laughs. When it comes to getting naked on stage she says she’s “delighted to be asked and will always oblige”.

Sitting premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year and will make its London debut at the Arcola Theatre from Wednesday. The new run will be the first time Parkinson has actually seen it – she was starring in Home, I’m Darling when Sitting opened in Edinburgh. “I knew that I wouldn’t be able to be in it or see it which was actually quite liberating,” says the actress, who admits she found the process of play-writing to be therapeutic.
“I really enjoy the solitary nature of writing. I like being in a room on my own, not necessarily having to get out of your pyjamas, with your thoughts. It’s really meditative and good for you.”
She’s unsure if she has another play in her, but certainly wants to write again and is currently collaborating with someone – she won’t say who – on an adaptation for TV.
Comedy is Parkinson’s natural home and she has grown increasingly weary of the suggestion that women aren’t as funny as men. “I have been made to laugh by women all my life just as I’ve been made to laugh by men.” The more the question is asked, she says, the more oxygen is pumped into the discussion. “We all know it’s not true.”
Is she a feminist? “Oh God, yeah,” she says. “There is never a question.”
But the play Parkinson is currently starring in, Home, I’m Darling turns feminism on its head. Judy Martin, played by Parkinson, becomes the archetypal 1950s housewife – despite living in modern-day Welwyn Garden City – giving up a high-powered job to cook and clean for her husband. She wears colourful dresses and keeps her 1950s-inspired house pristine.
We are all guilty, in a way, of fetishising the past, admits Parkinson. The 1950s might have become fashionable but the decade was not quite as shiny as Judy’s worktops.
“That’s what’s happened in the case of my character. She takes the dresses and the beautiful interiors and then she assumes that everything else was beautiful too and that everyone was kinder and the community was nicer. It’s this whitewashing of the past,” she says.
But what of Parkinson’s future? Well, ideally, she’d like a bit of a break. “I’m actually a very lazy person and, although I love what I do, if there wasn’t a financial imperative, I would very happily take quite a considerable amount of time off”, she says. Perhaps a nice sit down is in order. Someone fetch the paint brushes!
