Singer and actress Katharine McPhee is fighting back after hacked intimate photos of her appeared on various websites this week.
In a statement to People magazine, the 33-year-old has expressed her outrage over the publishing of the private images, which were stolen from her iCloud, urging lawmakers to reevaluate the way such violations of privacy are handled.
“I was hacked sometime in the last few years, and along with other celebrities a few days ago, my private photos were blasted all over some sick and despicable websites,” the former American Idol contestant told the publication.
“The photos that are mine I am not ashamed of. I love my body and they were taken for a man I was deeply in love with, or for no one but myself. But what is also truly disgusting is that these sites include photos that do not belong to me, and are not of my body, and I’ve learned this happens continually.”
The star has filed a lawsuit in a Los Angeles court seeking unspecified damages for the invasion of her privacy.
McPhee has also condemned editors at sites featuring the images, and she is calling for lawmakers to shut them down.
“The constant exploitation of women with no recourse for these websites is absolutely abhorrent,” Katharine continues. “These sites, which TMZ (thank you so much) brings more light and attention to by calling them out by name (shame on you), should be shut down. Period. The end. Even if you aren’t the one hacking, if you have taken stolen photos and put them on your site, you are an accessory and should be shut down. Laws need to be changed.”
The brunette beauty is asking others to take a stand on the issue, which she refers to as a “sex crime”, adding, “This is a privacy and sex crime issue that affects private citizens as well. I hope other female victims and men, for that matter, will help and join me in ending this absurdity. Game on.”
Earlier this week, nude images stolen from the phones of various celebrities - McPhee, Kristen Stewart, Miley Cyrus and former couple Tiger Woods and Lindsay Vonn - appeared on the controversial website Celebrity Jihad. Woods and Stewart have since taken legal action against owners of the site.

I mentioned on yesterday’s Miley Cyrus post that there has been another hacking scandal in which celebrities photos were stolen and posted online. In addition to Miley, Katharine McPhee, Lindsay Vonn, Tiger Woods, Kristen Stewart and Stella Maxwell were all affected. I won’t post the websites’ names because as I said yesterday, I aim to give these pr-cks as little space as possible. However, I will give the victims as much space as they want. Katharine, for example, has brought legal action against at least one of the websites that posted the photos. Katharine said that although she is not ashamed of the photos or her body, they were her photos to use as she saw fit and that this is, as we know, both a sex crime and theft of personal property.
The actress and singer, 33, filed suit in Los Angeles County Tuesday in response to intimate photos of her being published on pornographic websites after her phone got hacked.
“I was hacked sometime in the last few years, and along with other celebrities a few days ago, my private photos were blasted all over some sick and despicable websites,” McPhee tells PEOPLE exclusively. “The photos that are mine I am not ashamed of. I love my body and they were taken for a man I was deeply in love with, or for no one but myself. But what is also truly disgusting is that these sites include photos that do not belong to me, and are not of my body, and I’ve learned this happens continually.”
The Scorpion star seeks unspecified damages and injunctive relief in the documents — in which she’s referred to as “Jane Doe” — obtained by LaWestMedia and alleges that she experienced “horror, shock, shame, mortification, hurt feelings, depression and feelings of powerlessness” following the publication of the images. McPhee claims in the papers that she “had a reasonable expectation of privacy in the photographs on her telephone and iCloud.”
“The constant exploitation of women with no recourse for these websites is absolutely abhorrent,” she continues in her statement.
McPhee hopes that all people, public figures and private citizens alike, affected by similar breaches of privacy can find justice.
“I am not perfect,” she continues in her statement. “I never have been and never will be. I try every day to learn to be better and to always live and lead with kindness and love. But no one deserves this kind of intrusion. I have other friends on these sites, images and videos that were stolen and they cannot get taken down. This is not just a celebrity issue. This is a privacy and sex crime issue that affects private citizens as well. I hope other female victims and men for that matter, will help and join me in ending this absurdity. Game on.”
Tiger Woods and Lindsay Vonn have already gotten their photos taken down . To Katharine’s point, the photos posted of Tiger and Lindsay were stolen from Lindsay’s phone, not Tiger’s. So, yes a man was affected, but these bastards went after the women and it does need to stop. According to the website that People mentions, Katharine’s lawsuit also goes after an unnamed defendant who, “obtained the photos and made them available to the website.” I don’t know if that means the person distributing them or the one who stole them. I assume both would be eligible for the all-expense-paid trip to Hotel Fed Pen like the guy responsible for The Fappening got.
I’m glad Katharine is fighting back. I wish she hadn’t added the part about not being perfect and trying to be better because no one – repeat, no one – deserves to have their private photos stolen and posted without their consent. Maybe that was a preemptive move for the people who like to blame the victim? I would join Katharine in saying, “shame on you” to the websites who posted her photos but it’s probably a waste of breath because these awful people clearly have no shame.

It is disgusting that somehow women habe to apologise because their phones are hacked. Good luck to her.
I feel bad for anyone who gets hacked. I can’t even imagine being in their position, so vulnerable to this type of situation, to take nudes on my phone. Obviously it’s their right to do so, but man, those images will never be erased. They should go back to the old days and use polaroids. Safer!
I read about that the other day and I saw so many people commenting “they know they’re going to be hacked at some point. They should stop taking naked photos”.
Isn’t that the cyber crime equivalent to “don’t dress provocatively or you’ll get raped”?
Victim blaming is out of control and I hope those sick f…ers get caught and pay a high price.
Same for people distributing and giving publicity (TMZ is the lowest of the lowest).
No sane person would argue that it’s beyond disgusting and appalling to distribute child pornography but somehow they don’t think there’s a problem with showing people who did not consent?! (Obviously I’m not even talking in legal terms but plain discerning right from wrong).
ITA that victim-blaming is out of control. What is the difference between hacking someone’s phone and breaking into their house and stealing a photo album?
The big issue is that, in many states, legislation has not caught up with technology so it can be very difficult to prosecute these jerks that think it’s okay to violate someone’s privacy. So frustrating.
It was not just photos. Some videos were leaked as well from what I read so it’s even more disturbing and violating. Hope they catch the guy or girl responsible for this.

A versatile singer and actress, Katharine McPhee brought her first success as a runner-up in American Idol’s fifth season to a long career. In the 2000s and 2010s, she not only balanced roles in television series like Smash and Scorpion with her music, but she also demonstrated her breadth as a singer. Alongside frequent collaborations with idol writers such as Randy Jackson, Andrea Bocelli and David Foster, McPhee’s gentle style felt at home on pop albums like his self-titled debut in 2007 and Hysteria in 2015, as well as on more traditional dishes like I Fall in 2017 Love Too Light.
McPhee was originally from Sherman Oaks, California, and she began singing at the age of two. Her mother, Patricia McPhee, is an established singer herself, performing and recording as Peisha McPhee. She helped Katharine develop as a singer and later served with
McPhee’s older sister Adriana as a vocal coach on American Idol. Although McPhee sang and performed throughout her childhood and school years, she took singing seriously in college and attended the Boston Conservatory as a major in musical theater. After three semesters, however, she went to Los Angeles to audition for film and television jobs.
McPhee played roles in Crazy, a musical about Hank Garland, and an MTV series, You Are Here, which didn’t make it to the air. She also appeared in the productions of Annie Get Your Gun and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir before auditioning for American Idol in 2005.
After McPhee reached the last 12 years, her appearances on songs like “Someone to Watch Over Me”, “Come Rain or Come Shine” and “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” made her one of the judges on American Idol. and the favorite of the spectators. In May 2006, she became the runner-up of the fifth season, Taylor Hicks.
After the end of the American Idol season, McPhee was hired by entertainment artist Simon Fuller from the 19 Recordings Limited label and released her first single, Somewhere Over the Rainbow / My Destiny; It reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the second best single of 2006.
A few months later, she joined the remaining finalists and hicks of American Idols LIVE! Tour and also tour with Andrea Bocelli, who appeared as a guest judge on American Idol. She also worked on a version of Can’t Help Falling in Love, which appeared on Bocelli’s 2006 album Under the Desert Sky.
