tldr; Not a scam, just not a “good” financial investment. A $1.5K investment that netted 2 cents. Numbers and hard facts do show up, but mainly a narrative where I talk about my thoughts, feelings and experiences on crypto & investing.
At the beginning of 2018 the cryptocurrency market was doing particularly well and I had just spent the past year living comfortably off the returns while playing with the market. I was happy and I wanted to spread the wealth. A friend of mine started doing some research around cryptocurrency and showed me the Ice Rock Mining project. I did my best to share with him my thoughts around investing, that it is always a risk, and when you can’t afford to lose the money, you should not be playing the game.
I have this funny psychological habit of enjoying diversification in all areas of my life. I enjoy many hobbies, many lovers, and spreading my finances across various financial products and asset classes. In the realm of crypto this meant I played on a rotation of 5–8 different exchanges. I moved funds around to capitalize on the exchange differences (this is called crypto arbitrage ). I picked up alt-coins and ICOs on lesser known exchanges (OpenLedger, bigONE). I played with daily volatility on the larger exchanges. I watched some of them reveal themselves as scams (Quadriga, BTC-e) and others get hacked (Binance). The more spread out my funds where, the safer I felt. I even started to lend out money because it felt better to know that the funds were being used rather than just sitting in a bank.
While my friend was in the situation of needing to take care of his family and being the primary breadwinner, I was in the situation of having increased my ETH holdings. I ended up spending $1500USD (1.6ETH at the time) to help with the ICO. While I didn’t believe the outlandish claims on the site (a 439% ROI per year), the basis of the project sounded doable and sane to me.
When you read the calculations and the fine print, you will see that they based their ROI calculations on BTC value being $14,000, whereas currently it has just hit $8,000 again, and at the end of 2018 it sat at $3,500. This is important because the project is based on BTC mining. The premise of Ice Rock project was that they would create a mining operation in a cave situated in Khazakstan where the temperature is cool and the electricity is cheap. Since then, they seem to have run into a few problems and are now located in a warehouse. The details of their operations are uncertain, and fairly vague on their website, although they do answer some questions on their Telegram and public forums. They are still active on social media and post YouTube videos regarding their process, you can even find breakdown of their cost on Instagram .
At the time of writing this article(May 14 2019) 1.6 ETH has a market value of $330, this is an 88% decreas e in value had I kept it. Instead I used that ETH to invest in the Ice Rock project and ended up with 2210 units of ROCK2 , which is now worth $446. At the time of purchase they offered 45% extra ROCK2, which they honoured, hence the total value of ROCK2 being worth more than the depreciated amount of ETH. Unfortunately, I do not have access to the initial investment, althought I have heard rumours of buy backs.
Investing in this project is also supposed to offer monthly returns, so I signed into the site and looked at “My Wallet” and found transaction records of these returns. Starting from the end of September 2018, the Ice Rock team has made pay outs every month as they have promised according to their schedule. After 8 months, I have been paid out at grand total of 0.1536741 ROCK2 … which is essentially $0.02 cents. That is a measly 0.006% return rate, even a checkings account at my bank has an interest rate that is 25x that.
The calculations for the pay out values are explained on their Medium post . They have even written a manual with instruction s on how to access these dividends. Unfortunately for me and many others, the transaction fee would be more than the value returned. While Ice Rock Mining is a legitimate venture, has not been good investment. But that is the nature of investments, risky, volatile, and uncertain.
A lot of people look at investing as a way to generate more income, I personally like to think about investing as a way to distribute energy. The verb invest really means to give. We give time, resources, interest, money, and all of these are units of energy. When I feel good, I don’t give to receive, I give to help create, and if the act of creation endows me and all the supporting players more wealth, then it starts to feel really good. For me, the idea of investing and mentoring go hand in hand. You invest money when you don’t have the time, expertise, or interest to mentor.
The project itself appeals to me since it supports the crypto ecosystem, contributes computing power, and creates value for the players. The videos the team creates are hilarious and are fun to watch. I love the accents, I get such a kick out of them. They are clearly learning a lot about themselves, each other, and how to run a venture. This project still has the possibility of creating returns when more wealth flows into the system.
