Katelyn Ohashi is a 22-year-old American gymnast competing for the University of California, Los Angeles. Katelyn Ohashi started gymnastics at the age of three. At the age of 12, she made her debut at the Junior Olympic championship, and at 16 won the prestigious America’s Cup. As part of this competition, Ohashi became one of the last gymnasts to defeat Simone Biles, the future four-time Olympic champion. But after several years as part of the U.S. Junior gymnastics team and hopes to participate in the Olympics, Katelyn had to leave the sport.
The reason for leaving the sport were injuries – both physical and psychological: Ohashi and her physique was constantly criticized by coaches and other gymnasts. “I was relieved when I got injured. The team was embarrassed by how large I had become”, said Ohashi in an interview with the Players Tribune. “I’ve been compared to a bird that can’t fly because of its weight.”
The break in sports career wasn’t long. That same year, after recovering from a back and shoulder injury, Katelyn joined the USA athletic team — and, after meeting a new coach, learned to accept herself. “Gymnastics can be a very violent sport, but I don’t think it’s meant to be,” says Ohashi. — I just hope that in ten or twenty years people will leave this sport not injured”.
In addition to training, Katelyn and her fellow gymnast Maria Carey have a blog, “Beyond madness,” in which they honestly share their experiences and observations from the world of big sports and give advice about a healthy lifestyle. In a series of texts “Bodyshaping athlete” girls tell how parents hid from their food or they have exhausted yourself with tough cardio exercises before the main workout to avoid sharp comments from coach about their body.
In the article “dear no one this is for me”, written in 2017, Katelyn writes about the pressure she experienced and as a gymnast, and as a woman. “Women are expected to have a slim waist combined with sensual forms. People around us tell us that we still need to eat, but then look with disgust if we cross the” invisible line” of overeating. What saved me was that I began to ignore the opinions of others and focused on what I personally believe. Why do we ever let anyone dictate what we should think?” These ideas about self-acceptance athlete broadcasts not only in the blog and on her page in Instagram, but also on the gymnastics carpet.
